Ephedrine hcl legal or not?

    It's not simply a case of legal/illegal. The vast majority of drugs are legal, but require a prescription to purchase. Similar probably applies here.

    Controlled Drugs refer to certain drugs that have abuse potential (cocaine, morphine etc). So there are heavy penalties for sale of these without script as it is drug trafficking.

    The judge said he shouldn't have been convicted under the Misuse of Drugs Act as ephedrine isn't covered under it. He could have been charged with supplying a medicinal product without a prescription, which is a much lesser charge, but still illegal.

    So Ephedrine is not a Controlled Drug but it is not legal to sell or supply without a prescription.
