Breathing

    I've only recently started jogging....able to go about a mile non-stop. Hoping to do the Galway 8k in August. Anyway I'm wondering I should aim to deepen my breathing while I run,sometimes it isn't my legs that hurt, it's my chest, sometimes I feel my breathing is shallow.

    Anyway advice would be appreciated.

    Deep breaths through the nose and out through the mouth help me when running.

    You're running too fast.

    All running as a beginner should be at "easy conversational pace" - which means that you should be able capable of holding a conversation while you're running. If you can't then you're breathing too hard, which in turn means that your HR must be very high and that's because you're working too hard (there is science behind this which I can post if you want). If you slow down you'll be able to run further and you'll find it easier. As your base / cv fitness builds speed will come in naturally.

    Breathing is an automatic process, I've read stuff about artificially trying to control it but I don't recommend it, personally.
