Protein Questions

    Hi all,

Just got whey protein the other day (from myprotein.co.uk) to supplement my training (3 x weights sessions, 2 x cardio per week). Im 5' 9" and 13st. Have the following qus:

    1. The protein I got is not "doping free". Is this something to be concerned about?

    2. I am currently trying to take 15g in the morning, 30g after a workout (about 6pm) and 15g before bed every day. Comments?

    3. I have a huge bag of protein and no way to measure out 15g or 30g (weighing scales isnt accurate). Anyone able to tell me in terms of tablespoons?!

    4. Should I bring the protein shake to the gym with me to have straight after the workout or is it ok to take 45mins later when I am home?

    Cheers! :)

Ok while I've no idea on question 1 I can try and go for the rest.

    2. I've no idea what kind of protein (brand) it is so honestly can't tell you if 15g is a single or half portion. On mind that would be a half portion (scoop) so I wouldn't bother with it. I take a full 30g serving where you take your 15's.

    3. How big is your tablespoon? Did it not come with a scoop. At a guess I'd say about 1.5 heaped tablespoons should do. Alternatively go to a home store and buy those baking measures. They are only about a euro or two.

    4. The general guide that most go with is get it inside you within 15-20mins of your workout. In your case bring it to the gym with you. I do and if you look around the dressing room you would see quite a few dropping a shake before hitting the shower.

Unless you are a competitive athlete, don't worry about the "doping free" bit. It's like those cereals that don't have nuts as an ingredient but say "Won't guarantee nut free", it's to cover themselves.

Generally a scoop is about 28-30g. That's around 3 heaped teaspoons the way I do it, but it's really worth getting a small scales. If you are serious, there will come a time when you need to measure your food.

I'd bring the whey to the gym in a shaker, and when you are finished your workout, add water and shake like hell. Of course, if you cycle home after the workout, then having it at home is fine.

Whey after a workout is great, why do you need it the rest of the time?

I was told that its best to have it in the morning and before bed too to keep protein levels high in your system for best results. I know there are other slow release type proteins but I am only starting with protein so not really bothered getting them yet.

I alternate between cardio one day and weights the next etc etc, but take protein 3 times every day even on off days. This the right way to do it?

1 x heaped dessert spoon (the one you eat your cornflakes with) is roughly equal to 10g, give or take.

by the way to make slow release program, just have your protein at night, blend it with some oats.
