Updating bios without a floppy drive?

    Hi all,

I recently built a new pc which is having a couple issues. Apparently a bios update might do the trick. However, I didn't buy a floppy drive.

I can borrow a floppy drive from work but it will be a USB floppy drive as opposed to the normal one.

I don't recall if there is an option to boot from a usb device in my bios settings. I could be wrong.

I have never updated a bios before, is it a reasonably easy process?

I am using an ABIT IP35-E board!

    Cheers

    Download it....

    UPDATE 9-15-07

    Another new BIOS for IP35-E/IP35

-Added more RAM timing options (as low as 1, plus 1T/2T)
    -Added S1 suspend mode
-Fixed CPU temp to reflect true core temperature
-Fixed Super Pi speed issue of previous Beta BIOS (above)

It appears that the double post patch and the FP Audio selector menu were omitted from the Beta BIOS. No double post during restart. The system will double post after the PC is shut down.

If you cannot boot to the floppy drive on boot up then create the floppy floppies and use Nero to burn a bootable CD.

    Then boot to CD.

:) Typo. I meant create the bootable floppy and use Nero to burn a bootable CD.

The decent vendors won't tie you into using floppies. I reflashed my Gigabyte mobo using a Windows utility. It just downloaded, installed and asked me to reboot. Worked just fine and saved me from buying a floppy.

    Aye,

Updates using executable files are quite common nowadays.

I've seen it mentioned that people who end up running shedloads of bios updates for various machines always stick with the floppy/alternative solution just after POST as the windows executables are apparently more likely to turn your mobo into a brick. I'd be inclined to believe it.

Well I could borrow a usb floppy drive from work. But as you said I guess I could do it from a DVD-r?

I have never flashed anything in my life so any advice would be appreciated!
