I disagree with that, so much money is made from soul-less art and good marketing. OP do some market research, loads of info on exports and sales stats is available for free online.

everyones tastes are different, that is the most obvious answer i can give you. it doesn't just vary from a region to region/country to country. i went to an exhibition last summer in Marbaya, artists were there from all over the world and they all had different subject matter and styles, which were suited to themselves not to a specific group of people. so paint what you are interested in, try and sell it and you will just have to wait and see who is interested in it! unless someone can approach you telling you exactly what they want and handing you a picture or reference your not going to be able to figure out what the majority of people want to see painted. there is no such thing as "Irish people love landscapes so do that"

As mentioned above you should paint something that interests you. If you try to paint a subject you have no real interest in painting, you will tire of it very quickly and your work will not be up to your usual standard.

As for what sells? It depends who you want to target. If you want to target people who buy art for their homes, then go for landscapes and/or colours that will match the current colour trends in furniture. If selling to tourists, then local landscapes or cityscapes for them to remember their holiday. On the other hand if you want to be a famous artist, there is no one type of painting that sells best. Its a matter of having a unique style so that your work is recognisable and making a name for yourself by working very hard.

When I was in college, my teacher told me in Art History pictures of women and children have been/are the most popular.
Like what has been mentioned, you should be only making pieces you enjoy making, you can tell if you've enjoyed making something.
If want money, why not do commission works? like portraits and stuff?
