      I have a few shorthorn cross cattle , don't like the traditional breed as much as some people around me, prefer bit of shape but the markings/ colours are lovely and great mothers, what is the ideal cross on them ????

      Are you looking for replacements or are you selling weanlings?
      Shorthorns tend to be quiet with loads of milk, so a limousin cross for a replacement would be a good cross. If it's weanling you sell then a charolais cross produce fine calves too.

      what colour are the shorthorns

      are they grey or red and what are they crossed with

      grey shorthorn will bring a lovely cross to the CH in either bull or heifer and tend to be a good seller

      they dont seem to cross well to BB for some reason (well any i have seen)

      Shorthorn crossed with CH OR LM Bring great calves with loads of milk .

      SBU AI Bull provide great maternal cattle.

      Shorthorn cattle have survived the arrival of continental cattle and has adapted .

      Shorthorn breed will always be in the gene pool of quality beef herds.

      depends on whose end it gets, the daddy or the mammy, have a few CH lads off SHX cross cows and the ends on them are impressive but have also seen the other end of the spectrum but that was with the BB

      BB AND SH are at both ends of beef livestock. BB heavy muscle and SH dual

      purpose. I think on the safe side your better breeding with CH , LM or even Salers.

      Kind of the same thing. Both have good milk yield , however Simmental

      are more inclined to be better growth performance , when comes to beef.

      Never really saw a SI SH cross. milk wont be problem anyways. colour maybe.

      AGREE there, wont cross a BB to my SHX again, CH is bringing lovely cattle, have never tried the LM on them

      have a PBNR LM cow that i use for replacements, she will get a SH bull this year,

      Ya ,had to pay extra from AI agent, said he was in high demand when comes
      to replacements.

      SH /CH cross is a serious combination good colour and milk gives serious thrive very saleable weanlings ,SH/LM cross is good but not quite as desirable in ring

      If she comes from a good dam line , why not.

      You can't beat breeding your own livestock . At least you know their genetic

      The more you dilute the SH breeding the more milk you lose and milk is the rocket fuel

      True , however if you cross back with Simmental or even Hereford milk
      will still be constant.

      Shorthorn are not the only milky breed.

      Are you looking for replacements or terminal. If for replacements then Lim x sh make great mothers. I've four SH cows that I give Lims to every year hoping for heifers. The bulls will do ok because they usually have plenty of milk.

      If you want terminal then CH is best IMO.

      When I kept sucklers we had a number of SHxBA cows, great mothers with plenty of milk. Crossed back to a BA bull, seriously good weanlings that went for export.

      I've a few nice golden ch heifers off shorthorn cows which shud make great mothers surely ??? I have shorthorn straws I'm gonna use this winter, anyone got an opinion what cows I should give to ? Obviously hoping for replacements , will I give to my more beefy cows ?

      Bought a shorthorn bull a few weeks back . A fine bull full brother of lismacool jerome standing in AI. Let him off with a few cows fingers crossed for heifers
