Studying Abroad

Anyone here study abroad? Or did at some stage?

Ill explain my situation, didnt do a good Leaving Cert, and am studying in College in Ireland, second year in a semi-interesting Course.

Does anyone know what sort of system operates in transfering to other colleges in other countries? Portugal/Spain in paticular.

What I mean by that is, is there a relative system to points. And is there an equivilancy rating. Eeek im terrible at explaining.

Ok hypothetical student ;) got 200points in LC, what does that qualify him for in Spain? Do they run a system like that?

I know this is what I want to do.

Pretty sure there is an education board where you would get a better answer. Does anyone even reconise the leaving cert outside Ireland?

Ehm, in the UK they would have rough equivalencies between their A-levels and our Leaving cert points (not what you're interested in as you said Spain or Portugal).

If you did a poor leaving cert by your own admission then this may not be the angle you want to use to get transfered. The fact that you've got some college behind you however could stand in your favour - depending on your college your modules may have had a points rating (forget what it's called) which should be relevant across Europe.

I'll presume your not a mature student (pure presumption) but the age for this varies from country to country - check out what it is where you want to go also, this could potentially simplify getting into a course also.

A lot of countries basically just convert your points that you got in the LC. Not exactly sure how this is done, but I know they do it for Germany.
You may however need to take a language test (Spanish test for Spain etc) before they let you study there.

Does your college offer something called the Erasmus program? (i think that's what it's called, ask them in college)
It lets you study abroad for a year in the same course that you are doing now. I did it quite some years ago and went to Germany for 3 months and ended up really hating it.
At least this way, you can always come back to college here if it turns out this is not really what you wanted afterall. ;)
