    XP will boot from SATA, and it works fine. But when I plug in the IDEs as slave or cable select it gives the following poxy error.

    Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <Windows root>\system\hal.dll
    Please re-install a copy of the above file.

    I haven't reinstlled that file yet but I'd appreciate some pointers on putting in IDEs as slave, they're formatted as NTFS and were working fine before the Windows re-install.

    Could be that the boot.ini file on your windows partition is being invalidated by plugging in the new drive.

    Check whether your boot.ini has records like
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

    and if you, disconnect the ide drive, boot into win, add a few entries like
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional"
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional"

    under [operating systems] (note changed rdisk number), reconnect the ide drive, and try each, you might boot from the correct disk and partition. Set this to default.
    Confirm that it works, then remove superflous entries, to remove the os menu again.

    Or it might be possible to change the order in which disks are detected through the bios.

    In the bios you should be able to select which is pri and which is secondary, failing that the drive that you want to be slave look at the back of it, where the cable plugs in and it should have jumper switches. Most hd's have a diagram on how to set them to be master or slave...
