1972 VW Beetle

I have an option to buy a 1972 VW Beetle, it's my uncles in the UK - he was big into classic cars but is now selling up and moving to the Canaries. Car has been totally rebuilt from ground up and looks almost like new, mileage is around 66k. I can have it for £10k sterling, uncle says the open market price is at least 12k sterling.

So my big concern is about VRT, VAT etc when importing it. How will it be valued by revenue ? If my uncle issues a £10k invoice will it be acceptable as valuation or how do they value classics?

Have imported many modern cars over the years but have no clue about classics, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Over 30 years old is flat rate. €156 I think.

Flat rate for VRT is €200.

Afaik Duty and VAT wil be due on the invoice price plus shipping. That would be over €4K on a £10K invoice!

If the car was registered to a private individual in NI for at least 3 months, then only VRT would be charged.

So you either need a address in the north or know someone in the north that you can leave it in there name for 3 months before it goes into yours to avoid any unnecessary taxes.

The rules are the rules, no law is been broken. You'd nearly swear billionaires don't try to avoid tax, and volunteer to pay as much tax as possible 😄

I recently looked into getting an old Beetle from the UK but it was working out too expensive…along with the VAT, add in transport also . Plenty of Beetles in Ireland if you seek them out beyond the usual DD adverts. I found a beautiful immaculate '67 for around 14k…really immaculate hence the price.
