    It's taxofficeireland dot com.

Not putting in the address in case someone clicks on it

Isn't it ironic that you payed VAT on that phone call.

Yes. It's a legitimate number. You dialled it and you were charged. An illegitimate number would suggest if you dialled it, it wouldn't work

It was a scam. It’s not the tax office.

Revenue now has landline numbers with standard charges. The old numbers were "1890" numbers, not "1590", they got rid of them earlier this year and switched back to landline, and while they were expensive to ring from a mobile you would have needed to be on the phone to them all day to rack up that kind of a bill.

    It's not a tax office. It's a scam.

None of that means the OP didn't make the call in question though.

Probably a scam. They get you to call the number and charge you to the hilt for it. The 1590 number doesn't belong to the revenue anyway. There are two dodgy looking websites listed when you google search the number which are taxofficeireland <dot> com and revenue-irish <dot> com.

Where did you get the number from? Did they ring you first by any chance or a missed called?

Email the provider and cc the regulator and ask for a refund.

Had to do it before and it worked.

Do you get charged if you rang for a second to see who it was or do you have to be on for a bit

Yes, you'd probably be charged if you rang the number and it was answered. 1590 numbers go for around 3 quid a min so it would have had to be much longer than just a second on the phone probably.

Lots of these scams going around lately it seems.

    Lesson learned I think
    Don’t answer calls I don’t know
    Don’t ring back

Or, y'know, Google the number before you call back.

That’s the thing I never called back any number
And yes I did ring tax office in July and got sorted
Still don’t really know how I got scammed

It's possible this scam forwards your call to the legitimate revenue switchboard so you are paying them the premium rate fee while you are conducting your business with the department.

Much better business plan than employing rooms full of people barely able to speak English trying to scam money out of people.

Are we getting crossed wires? [PUN :D] I know the OP must have rang someone but I mean that it's coincidental that the OP rang Revenue at some point too.

Unless I am not following this at all.
