Travel insurance

    Hi all,

    Have a bit of predicament with an upcoming trip and just looking for advice.

    Basically as a Christmas present my parents decided to treat me and my siblings to a trip to Krakow in January. We are going from the 1st-5th. However, my grandad is currently very sick and we don't think he has long left. There is every chance we won't be able go on the trip if anything happens to him in and around those dates. My mom reckons her and my dad have travel insurance but the rest of us don't.

    Basically what I want to know is would we be covered by any travel insurance we take out now considering we are already aware of the fact there is a good chance we won't be able go? If we are I think it would definitely be wise to take it out.

    Thanks in advance for any help!

    Sorry but what you've described is textbook 'pre-existing condition' and you would not be covered for cancellation/curtailment cause by that person's illness or passing.

    Some policies don't extend the cover you're thinking of to a grandparent. Here is the relevant cover in AIG's current travel policy....

    death, injury or illness of the spouse/Partner, father, mother, father-inlaw, mother-in-law, brother, sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, child, fiance(e), close business associate of an Insured Person or person with whom an Insured Person has arranged to travel;

    Thanks for the reply. Would I be right in saying that if my parents do already have insurance in place they will be covered then? My grandad was sick when we booked the flights but he has taken a turn since so we didn't expect him to be this bad. I'm guessing the fact they have insurance in place before booking flights and before he took a turn means they would be covered?

    You mention that your grandad was first 'sick' and later he 'took a turn' which I read to be two distinct states which happened in sequence. You say your parents booked their flights 'before he took a turn' which implies that he was already 'sick' when they booked their flights??

    Either way, they need to read their policy. It may exclude cover for curtailment/cancellation in the event of a sudden illnesses in a close relative who is above a certain age, it's impossible to give you a definitive answer.

    Thanks for the advice. Hopefully it doesn't come to it but glad to have an idea of where we stand.
