Maximum Import Capacity Calculation

    We're currently on a 38 kVA maximum import capacity, but the aim is to bring it down to 29 kVA for the flat rate PSO levy.

    I've made a list of the significant appliances that use electricity, apart from this list we have LED panels installed which shouldn't significantly impact the calculation:

    Maximum Import Capacity Calculation kW

    Computing 0.5
    1 IBM eServer 514W 0.5
    1 HP Gen 9 Server 500W 0.5
    7 Desktop Computers 180W 1.26

    Workshop 3 Phase
    1 Extractor Fan 0,75 kW 380V 1.9 A 0.75
    1 Ramp 1 2.2 KW 400V 50hz 2.2
    1 Ramp 2 2.6KW 3 Phase 2.6
    1 Ramp 3 3.5 KW 3.5
    1 Compressor 4HP 3KW 3
    Total 14.81

    According to Electric Ireland MIC = (Maximum Demand / 0.95) x 1.05. Am I right in thinking that the MIC required for our premises excluding lighting is 17 kVA? or should the three phase appliances be calculated differently?

    Some websites advise checking the maximum demand level on your bill, but there is no maximum demand level listed. I rang Energia and they said that it is not available for the type of metering we are configured for.

    kVA = (V * I * 1.732) / 1000
    where 1.732 is the simple numerical value for the square root of 3

    To do this you must have at least two pieces of information:

    the load line-to-line voltage (V)
    the maximum load phase current (I)

    What is the payback on getting the reduced MIC?

    the maximum load phase current (I)

    Would V and I be available on the spec sheets for the appliances or how do I establish them?

    Currently the PSO levy is 38 kVA @ €3.33 per kVA = 126.54 excluding VAT, if we can drop it to 29 kVA it'll be €20.73 - an annual saving of €1270

    Your formula is correct, but in this case it is not really needed as the OP already knows how much power each unit consumes.

    In Ireland a 3 phase LV supply is taken to be 400V so V=400

    OP you could simply measure what you are using over a number of days.
    So rather than calculating what you are using, measure what you actually use.
