How to use a kong properly

So we have been using a kong with our pup, she loves it and it slows her down from hoovering up all her food too quick. Not sure we are using it the best way though, we usually just put her normal dog food into it and she knocks it around the floor to get the food out. From looking online people put peanut butter and other stuff inside to keep the dog occupied for longer. What's the best way to use it? What do people on here put in their's?

    Hi!
You can use it whatever way you want as long as your doggy is safe and happy.
My dog is also super fast eater so we just a variety of food dispensing toys (kong, treat balls and a bob-a-lot). So keep using it for normal food to help slow down her eating.
It might be an idea to feed her out of a bowl every now and again though just so she knows 'how' to eat out of a bowl.Only reason I mention this is that I knew a dog that was super scared of its new food bowl, it's tag would hit off of it and make a sound and the dog became freaked out by it!

we mix food with mince, fill a kong ball and freeze it. So he has to bounce it off the ground or throw it to get it all out. keeps him busy for about 30 mins. sometimes use it to occupy him when someone new comes to the house.

I mix peanut butter, natural yoghurt and fruit like banana or blueberries, fill the Kong with it and freeze it. It's messy but he loves it!

There are loads of ways to make dinner time "fun" such as scatter feeding- throw the food onto the patio/ ground/ grass and they love to find every bit!! The balls you can fill with dry food abd they knock around are great too :)

small treats or kibble in the bottom hard to reach bit, wet dog food on top and stick in the freezer for a few hours.

For our teething puppy we tend to go with a few small treats near the top that are easy enough to get at, a big treat near that bottom that's hard to get out, then fill with water and freeze.

I used to put Primula in for my girls (they had one each) That used to take them a while to get out. You could really get it in good with the tube...

I read a while ago that you're not meant to block the small hole because it can cause suction/trap the dogs tongue. We've never had it happen although Bailey did get a puppy kong wedged on his half jaw lol! :p

I often mash up banana with some peanut butter and freeze them. Or like tonight they're having broken up beef nuggets that I've jammed into them which still take them a while to work out.

Kong actually make Kong filling in a squirty canister for their Kong's. Not tried it myself yet. I usually use assorted treats, that just fit into the biggest end.

This what I use. Squirt a bit of paste into it, then throw in a few nuts (burns) and break a denta stick and squeeze it in. It's a bit of a mission to get it all in but my terrier and collie love it and get almost an hour out of it.

I bought a kong, and the dog ATE the kong!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chewed it to pieces  never got round to bringing it back to the shop for a refund... (had the packaging)

Baby bell cheese in a kong, quickest, mess free way of occupying them for a few minutes. Just remove packaging and push it into the kong. Job done. They love it.

My dog did the same. So got the black one...the supposedly "indestructible" one....that one met the same demise.

I still use the black kong but unfortunately I cannot leave it with them unattended. So once they finish whats in it, its picked up immediately. Its a pity because I would like to leave it with them when I go to work in the mornings but its too much of a hazard for my dogs.

Can I ask what sort of dogs they are? I find our dog quite destructive of toys and stuff, but she plays loads with her Kong, even empty, throws it around and catches it and it doesn't seem to have come to any harm yet.

Her mattresses/dog cushions and the like however.... Grrr.

My idiot is a terrier x. He never bothers his beds/cushions etc, but will rip stuffed toys to pieces (I buy them by the carrier bag in charity shop!) He doesnt seem to 'get' that rawhides/rubber rings/pigs ears/etc are food - he just carries them about - I was amazed that he chewed up the Kong

LOL That's hilarious, that he doesn't bother with rawhide things - any pigs ears and the like that we give ours (sheepdog cross) are devoured in a couple of minutes flat.

Hes a bit "special needs" - most uncooked bones are left untouched - doesnt know what to do with them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - then some bones he will happily crunch for ages. He NEVER eats over-large bones however :o Ive stopped buying rawhides, pig ears, chews etc - all left lying around, a bit soggy, from being carried in his mouth, stressing what to do with them ...

Maybe he just doesn't like the taste, but it's kind of like an unwanted present - he doesn't want to be rude to you! :D

I have a border terrier and a border collie but the terrier is the main culprit for kongs not surviving. Thankfully mine are the opposite and don't destroy beds etc. but toys just don't last in my house unfortunately.

The only thing I have found that she hasn't yet destroyed is real tennis balls (i.e. ones you would by in a sports shop rather than a doggy tennis ball).

So it seems to be the terrier instinct, perhaps?
Funny they go for toys and not their beds, mine must be stupid, she's an equal opportunity destroyer, but the kongs are nice and strong. Or so I thought. ;)
