I am having problems sending emails using webmail.iol.ie. I get an error message:

    An error has occurred

W1: Send failed 452 4.3.1 Insufficient system storage
    Back to Previous Page

Return to Inbox (if logged in)

Is this happening to anyone else?

means your inbox or recycle bin is full or outbox, in other words no space left.

I thought that and emptied it.

This has only started this week, and I have much less stored (almost nothing - and a lot less than last week) so I think something has changed.

My emails work properly from outlook but one contact cannot receive emails for some strange unexplained reason. Unfortunately, it is a contact that is used often.

Is there a contact for support for iol.ie - BT have gone all business and wholesale.

Really you need to abandon that address, same as @indigo.ie users. Clocks a tickin.

I tried it now and got same message. They are probably closing it down. I emailed BT customer care but wont hold my breath.

I phoned BT support on 1800 924 925 (option 5) and spoke to a very nice gentleman who said he could find nothing wrong but would escalate the problem.

    I shall wait and see.

Incidentally he said all that they (BT) do is deliver the email, they do not send email - that is up to the network service provider - in my case Vodafone.

I would be reluctant to lose the *****.iol.ie address as I have used it for decades and it is very short.

You get what you pay for, so you may not have a choice. :(

I had extensively used an @oceanfree.net e-mail address since the day it launched, but after the 15,000 @ireland.com users got dumped a few years ago, I've moved pretty much everything over to gmail.

Well, I was with BT who sold out to Vodafone and chose to go wholesale or business only. As part of that deal, they committed to keeping IOL email going.

Indigo was an Eircom product who have a very different approach to customers. Oceanfree was ditched a long time ago, and was a free service anyway, whereas IOL.IE was part of a broadband (even dial up service - remember them) and was a paid for service.

There are no new iol.ie addresses available so it will eventually die, but not for a while. I would be concerned using gmail from a privacy point of view, and I would find it hard to get a nice address. I do not want a [samtheman3769@gmail.com] type of address.

Call from BT. They found an error on their server and it has been resolved and all OK now.

Just thought you might like to know.

    Had the same problem myself.

    back not working again.

    It is a server issue.

Update: The error message does not come up now, but the emails do not arrive.

However, the iol.ie webmail service will continue but not be updated, so what is there now will remain. There is a limit on storage and a good move would be to get another email address and set up global forwarding to that address. This allows the retention of the ****@iol.ie email address, but nothing is stored on the server so no storage issues. Sending is done as now, retaining the ****@iol.ie address as sender.

It's very easy to get a decent looking gmail address

firstname.middleinitials.lastname at gmail.com will give you a good chance of a good looking unique address

    As for iol.ie email

I did this for my old man - created a gmail account which pulls all mail via pop from his iol account (and deletes all when pulled in iol so no fear about storage issues)

His outlook client syncs with gmail using imap but uses his web provider's smtp for outgoing mail but with from and reply-to set as his iol account..

At least when the time comes that iol is defunct - he'll still have all his mails archived in gmail

Considering all access to Gmail is encrypted with SSL and that they are now utilizing TLS encryption where other recipients also have it turned on, they are delivering a pretty secure service for the price a few targeted ads.

Your IOL e-mail is completely unencrypted and available to anybody to intercept and read. So its much less secure.

If proper security is your thing, then get yourself a ProtonMail account - You might even get your nice.name@protonmail.com. ;)

Of course you could pay Google or M$FT a few euro a month to have a secure mailbox that their algorithms don't look at. :p

Anyone else having trouble with iol web mail today?

It was hit and miss yesterday but I couldnt get it working properly at all today. I use an email client, Incredimail, and normally it brings the mail from several accounts to the desktop but it wont work today. Going in directly to the iol website to check my main account I got an error message and now nothing at all. No mail showing which is prtty shtty considering that is my main email account for a lot of things.

Another account I have is much the same. I was able to forward a couple of emails but most of them came through with an error message saying that the message was too large for the cache and left on the server.

No problem using Incredimail to send emails but I cant receive any.
