Looking for the name of an anime that used to run in the mid-90s

    Hi guys. Hope someone here can help. There an anime Ive been looking for but can't remember the name of it. I used to air on Irish tv in the mid 90s. It was a space opera, with the good guys fighting against an evil enemy force. The main characters where 3 mecha drivers (one of the robots had a giant gatling cannon), 2 guys and a girl poilet. There was a special ninja robot that would come out of nowhere and help them, no one knew who it was. As the series wore on the main character merged with the ninja robot and could become it in battle. But it takes a toll on him. Near the end the enemy also gains access to a similar ninja robot, just as the main character becomes really worn out.
