How do Leap Cards work?

How do leap cards work? I understand you buy a card and put credit on it and your fare comes out of the credit.

In Galway, a 24hr fare is €4.20. Does that cover you all day on all the eight different routes, they call the red zone.

There is the option of a seven day ticket for €20.20. Am I missing something or does this cover you for all the eight routes since its within the red zone? What's the catch with the seven day ticket.

It works for 24 hours from validation, if your first journey commences at 12.15 on Monday the fare will be valid for unlimited travel on all listed routes up to 12.14 Tuesday.

If you board before the cutoff and the card validates you may finish that journey beyond the 24 hour period.

Yes, that is exactly what it covers.

Sorry for jumping in on this thread, but does anyone know how long it takes for leap cards to arrive if you order them online? I was looking in to ordering a personalised one but can't seem to find any info regarding delivery time on the website.

I just tried to buy a monthly cobh to cork city rail ticket on my leap card, the girl at the payzone thing explained that I put money in, and it just works like a monthly ticket somehow magically?

I didn't understand how the system could be that backward, so I didn't try it.
Anyone who knows what they're doing with leap cards care to tell me if I need to ask for something specific or do I just put in undisclosed amount of money and irish rail just take full price until I get to a full month and then pay me back or something?

You ask the person in the payzone shop to load a monthly Cork/Cobh rail ticket onto the card. You pay the full amount of the ticket there and then.

Then you tag on/tag off at the stations just to prove you've validated the ticket.

She is getting mixed up with the epurse, which is the pay-as-you-go mode, whereby you load a certain amount of cash onto the card and use it whenever you want to travel - this is not available on Cork suburban rail yet, only Bus Eireann city services.
The card can be used for both.

Alright, thanks. I'll give it a try again on the way home. Amazingly it's the only place within 30 minutes of my route to and from work.

No idea why they don't have it on the website, or on the ticket machines yet. Slow as hell.
