    Hey all,

    Just wondering.

A train I often get is the 1810 Heuston to Portlaoise

This week this train has bee far more crowded than it used to be. Carriages full of people standing etc.

Has something changed with capacity or another service changed that has caused this?

    cheers

The 1810 was reduced from a 6-car to a 4-car a month or so ago. Normally people are standing as far as Sallins.

these services need suburban style stock. not intercity speck stock. of course we have such stock but apparently they won't do the TGV speeds portlaoise only services apparently do. don't worry, your not the only route with capacity problems. waterford is a problem route also. i can't see it changing either.

    A 4-car 22K has 262 seats; a 4-car 29K has 185 seats.

Many of the 22K runs to Portlaoise are to/from the maintenance depot avoiding unnecessary running of empty trains.

the maynooth and droghida services seem to manage fine. why? because they need the bags of standing room that the 29s have. standing room which clearly portlaoise being a short stopping all shacks suburban service needs as well, but of course nobody thought about that when procuring rolling stock. the likes of the waterford services which need 22s could be strengthened properly if stock was used on the routes they were designed for rather then IE'S convenience. 22ks are not suitable for all stops suburban services. that is clear. they can't cope with such standing room. they are regional/ic stock designed for stopping less and where standing room wouldn't be as much of an issue as long as there is enough carriges. which if they were used where they were supposed to be, would be the case. but this is ireland so scrap all that

and? god love them how did they manage before pointless out of the way depots like portlaoise which cause so many problems and solve nothing apart from some god knows what for IE?

But the 29000 is specifically designed to carry hundreds of standing passengers while the 22000 is only designed for seated passengers as evidenced by the lack of handrails and grabrails.
