Ok I let my second provisional run down without learning to drive and now I see you need 10 lessons to get your 3rd provisional but I can't get lessons without a provisional licence. How do I get around this problem/ have I understood this wrong?

You'll need to apply for your 3rd provisional, but since you passed your theory test about 4 years ago (I assume) you wont need to do any lessons to the driving test.

You only need to do the 12 mandatory EDT lessons if one of these two criteria apply you:

    1. You got your first ever leaner permit/provisional license AFTER April 2011. (I doubt if that will apply to you, seeing as you have had two so far and they last for two years.)

    2. Your last learner permit has been expired for 5 years or more. If you aren't sure when it expired, ring up your local NDLS centre, give your name, address, DOB & PPS number and they can advise you when it expired.

If it has not been expired for more than five years, you need to apply for your driving test before you can get your 3rd learner permit. You don't need to actually sit the test. You just need to have applied for it. When you apply for your test, you'll be given a booking number. Bring that with you when you go in to get your new learner permit. When you get the new leaner permit in the post, you can then start learning to driving. You do not have to get any mandatory lessons. You can if you want to, but you can also get a friend or family member to teach you how to drive. When you feel you are ready to to sit your driving test, you apply to do it.

If your last learner permit has been expired for more than 5 years, it is deemed as if you never had one at all. You have to start the entire process over from scratch....you sit your theory test, you get en eye exam, you get a learner permit & you do 12 mandatory lessons with an approved RSA instructor. You apply for your test whenever you feel you are ready to do it, but you must have your leaner permit for at least 6 months, before you can sit your test.
