    Hi,

a friend is getting this code:

Google tells me that it is to do with the Evap system- perhaps a hose leak or a faulty N80 valve but is not particularly clear.

I spoke with a mechanic yesterday who said that it was a leaking intake manifold gasket.

Can anybody with experience of Volkswagen suggest a logical course of action to diagnose and resolve the issue?

    Thanks,

    we do have VCDS.

Activate the evap valve using VCDS and see if you can hear it clicking. They are a common failure.

If the inlet manifold gasket was leaking you would know all about it. You would have more symptoms than just a warning light and more codes than just the evap one.

Thanks. I have only used VCDS once so far.

Is there a tutorial on line as to how to use it or could you tell me how to activate the valve?

    thanks,

    Richard

Once you go into the engine controller it is there, look for "Output Tests" on the bottom row. Then select the evap valve. If it is working you will hear it clicking.

EDIT: You do this with the ignition on and the engine off.

Clicking away well I am afraid to say.

Perhaps the pipes are blocked or leaking?

Will take a look in daylight.

There is another mechanical valve under the manifold that might be the culprit. Not easy to access though :(

The light comes on after a while - say 100 km or so.

I wonder would exercising the valve and the checking of the pipes and the opening and closing of the piping connections that I have just done be enough. Will get him to drive it a bit and check again.

If not then I'll take a look at this other valve.

Is there a specific test for that one I wonder?

Had the same error with my Golf GTI. On mine it was the charcoal Canister. Its the Black sort of box thing on the left hand side of the main engine cover. Has a couple of pipes going into it! Its caused by this becoming dirty or blocked, just cleaned mine and it was good to go and haven't got the error in months!! Sometime just shaking the canister can get rid of the fault but normally it will come back on soon enough after!! its a cheap enough part to replace anyway if its totally gone!
