5.1 problem with basic UPC box

Trying to sort out a problem for my folks. They had an old grey UPC box hooked up to a Sony 5.1 DVD system and it was working perfectly. They got a basic new black UPC box (not the Horizon one) installed and have lost their surround sound.

The box has a single scart connection, but no HDMI (weirdly). The 5.1 DVD system has two scart connections and a HDMI out.

I've connected UPC to 5.1 using the scart, and 5.1 to TV via HDMI out, we are getting sound but no picture. My own guess is they need a UPC box with HDMI out, which I'm almost sure the only one had.

Am I right, or is there a way to hook it up properly using current setup?

If its scart only its a SD box and I dont think the SD channels are broadcast in 5.1 and if they were scart only does stereo, not 5.1.
I suspect on the 5.1 system you have to select the HDMI as the output source and on the TV select the HDMI as the input to see the picture on the TV.
