Hotels on outskirts of London

Hi, planning to travel to London for short holiday by car via ferry in next few weeks and looking for some suggestions for cheap and cheerful hotels for a family of 6 (2 adults and 4 kids under 10) on outskirts of London. Plan would be to drive from Holyhead or Fishguard and stay on outskirts on London and travel into London by train/tube on a number of days rather than driving in. Basic hotels like Premier Inn would be fine, but looking for a location where travel into central London is straight forward via train/tube? All suggestions greatly accepted. Thanks in advance.

Wimbledon might be handy, loads of cheap hotels there and also easily commutable into town?

Your main problem is finding Hotels with their own car park. Most don't have same and recommend that you use Multistories nearby which soon adds up!

I used Holiday Inn in Brent Cross a few years ago. They end of line on Piccadilly Line and you need to ring them to send over the shuttle bus. But - car park was free and the shuttle wasn't a major problem.

there's Stay City apartments next to Hayes and Harlington station and a hotel next to Feltham station, both these suburbs are utter sh*tholes, but it wouldn't impinge on you as they're cheek by jowl next to the stations.

Holiday Inn Newbury Park, it has parking, handy enough to get to if coming down from Holyhead, a minutes walk from a Central line station, not much to do in the area though (a couple of parks around, O'gradys pub is 15 walk/5 minute taxi away) - couldn't tell you about price though

A lot depends on whether you want one room or two. I recently did a similar trip with 2 children and found that the family room was the main limitation.

We stayed in the Holiday Inn Express Watford. It has a car park and overlooks Watford Junction station (no noise) every 15 minutes there's a train that takes 18 minutes to get into Euston. There's not much near the hotel but the main shopping area is about a 20 minute walk. There's a good pool complex nearby too.

We found Superbreak.com to be very helpful and good value for booking. (no association)

Travelodge's Woking Central Hotel is also a good bet. Cheap and they have family rooms. Free parking and a fast train (25 minutes) to central London (Waterloo).

Woking is the right side of London for driving from Ireland too so easy to get to. The trains are very regular and fast straight to Waterloo. However they are expensive. Weekend return for an adult is £12.80, midweek off-peak return is £16.70 and midweek peak return is £19.40. That will add up if you're going to London on a few occasions.

As you're going for two weeks I'm not sure what your plans are other than going into London but Woking is well positioned for a good few attractions. For the kids Legoland amd Chessington are all within 30 minutes drive. You can get down to Southampton in an hour where you have Paulton's Park, New Forest etc. And it's right on the M25 so you can get anywhere around London pretty easily, and of course have the Surrey countryside if that's your sort of thing.

Theres a travel lodge in Twickenham and Teddington that have car parks and right by the stations. Right side of London too.

There are plenty of reasonable hotels around Harrow. It's definitely on the outskirts (Zone 5) but has really good transport links.

If you stay near the town centre, you have the Metropolitan line from Harrow-on-the-Hill station, which goes straight into Baker Street in about 20 minutes. There are loads of options in Harrow town centre, Travelodge, Premier Inn etc.

Or if you stay in South Harrow, the Piccadilly line will get you straight into Piccadilly Circus/Leicester Sq etc in around 40 minutes. There's a nice reasonable hotel a few minutes' walk from South Harrow station too, Euro Traveller Premier, I stayed there once.

They opened a new Premier Inn in Richmond about a year ago. It has parking but costs a tenner a night. It's a super nice area, down by the river is lovely, You won't want to be in the city every night, and you're at the end of the District Line in Zone 4. It's also convenient for driving on the M4.

Kingston is just a short drive (or boat trip) up the road where you can go see Hampton Court.

I would stay in a premier inn - far cleaner and nicer than travelodge (have stayed in both). Family rooms from about £40 a night. Premier inn in Epsom, surrey is very close to chessington (10/15 mins in car) and is also on the South West train line into Waterloo (London eye, Houses of Parliament, very central). That Premier inn is 10 mins walk from station and train journey 30 mins, every half hour. Epsom town centre is busy enough, shopping mall restaurants and pubs etc. Wimbledon nice and handy too, and is further into London on the same train line, but hotels will be more expensive because of that.
