Can anyone explain what options I have open for this. I am a History and Geography teacher but I am worried about the new junior cert and simply put there are limited number of jobs with my subjects. The first year of my Arts degree i studied English so i am hoping this will make it a little easier to become teaching council registered. Is Oscail the only option open to me. I would appreciate any help.
Would actually love to become qualified in Politics and Society but that doesnt seem to be coming any time soon

First of all get your qualifications assessed by the Teaching Council - they will tell you where you have shortfalls i.e. ECTS required and in what areas e.g. literature. This will cost you €200 but IMO its worth it.

Courses - I'm sure NUIM run the evening diploma / BA programmes - they do this is NUIG and you can study: English, History, French, Spanish and IT but this is dependent on the numbers interested in a specific subject. If you're only adding one subject you go to university one evening per week usually 6.30 - 9.30. (I chose NUIM as your name suggests). You pass everything and send your transcripts and the information sheet from the TC assessment and that's it.

Are you teaching at the moment? When I was doing my dip, English was over subscribed so it may be difficult to find work. I havn't seen many vacancies for His/Geo and English but I have seen a lot of English / Religion vacancies.

    I hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply mtoutlemonde.
I'm really only thinking of adding English as I have done one year in uni already studying it so that should shorten my route to getting qualified in it.
I know History, geography and english hardly ever come together but I am just doing anything to make myself more employable. Sick of the same struggles every single summer

Yeah you're better off doing English - I meant to say that - aswell as doing the third and fourth BA years - the Teaching Council require you to have 10 ECTS from 1st year - so you will have this covered.

Best of luck with your studies. It's no easy task but if you're interested in English, you will enjoy it.

I did Irish in 1st Year. I later returned and did the two-year Higher Diploma in Arts (HDA) in UCD. Irish in 1st year was worth 20 ECTS credits. I received 60 ECTS credits for doing the HDA - 30 ECTS credits in each year. As I mentioned elsewhere here, we attended class two nights per week, for 3 hours each night. Applications for the HDA, otherwise known as the Part-time BA, in UCD closed in early July. I don't know the closing dates for the other universities. However, if you directly contact the subject department in which you want to study with a compelling story asap they will usually make an exception to this application deadline. Only they have the ability to do it. But do it now, today.

Two other points, Maynoothrules. I contacted the TC and told them my existing 1st year qualification. I did not have to part with €200 to have them assess it as it was a conventional Irish university qualification. I suspect as you've got a similar qualfication from NUIM you can email them beforehand and sort it out without parting with cash. Additionally, if you do the HDA in UCD I'm 100% certain that the TC recognise this as acceptable for TC registration purposes and you also will not have to part with cash. It quite probably is the same for the HDA in other universities, but I can't say with certainty if this is the case. I found Agnes in the TC to be very helpful, clear and efficient in the whole process.

Second, without meaning to be presumptuous or echo another poster but are you sure it's wise to choose English as your subject? When I did the HDip the course was crammed with people doing History and English as a combination. It was by far the most popular combination. You'd want something exceptional to distinguish you on your cv with such competition. English could open doors to other careers but it's a tough one to choose if you want to get a teaching job in Ireland.

Instead, and many people are not aware of this, you could do a HDA in any available subject and then, when you've finished it, add on the required 10 ECTS credits from 1st year. Then the TC will register you. This was certainly the case with a couple of people who did my subject in the HDA. In short, don't choose English simply because you have it in 1st year, when you could choose any subject and it's only 10 additional ECTS credits. All the best.

    Hi MaynoothRules

What did you end up doing? I am in the same boat with History and Geography. I am thinking of adding another subject perhaps maths. I am currently subbing and have free time but not enough to do a full time course.

How would I go about this? How many modules do I need to complete to be qualified to teach maths?

    Thanks
