    What';s the job like?
Coming from an energy background, they want to fly me out for an interview and was told I'd nearly be guaranteed a job.

    Is it enjoyable?

These lads have been recruiting from Ireland for a few years at this point. They seem to target Mechatronics graduates which I was a few years back. Had a class mate who went out for an interview in Holland. I can't remember if he was offered the role but I remember him saying the job seemed fairly hands on for an engineering role which wasn't really what he was looking for. Couldn't tell you the exact position he interviewed for. The company covered the costs of flying out for the interview and accommodation.

Collins McNicholas are the agent they use in Ireland. I haven't heard anything against them and I've known people who have had dealings with them.

hey, yeah thats the same agency. they have positons for systems engineer, mechanical, test, assembler. they seem to be more hands on roles alright which I dont mind. good to get the hands dirty now and again.

are you a mechatronics graduate yourself? im looking for work in that area but finding it difficult in ireland at the moment. ive no real engineering experience apart from academic. Would work abroad if i found a decent job.

I graduated with a level 8 mechatronics degree in 2009. The biggest problem I faced was that a mechatronic degree leaves you in the jack of all trades category and it means you will often be competing for jobs in a particular discipline with guys who specialized in that discipline. The other side of the coin is that you have a much broader scope of jobs to compete for. Then again there are also jobs best filled by mechatronic graduates.

You might not believe it but back when I graduated the job market was worse than it is now. A lot of guys in my course, myself included, went on to do a taught masters so that they could specialise in a particular area of engineering. This worked well for all of us, we all ended up in roles in the fields we specialised in.

Not having any industrial experience through an internship or college placement is definitely a disadvantage but there is plenty of people in that position who manage to find an engineering role. Also don't get discouraged if takes a while to land a job. I had a friend who did the exact same degree and masters as me and it took him a year to land a job. His grades were significantly better than mine but I'd expect my CV writing and interview skills are a bit better.

    Hey,

Thanks for the advice. Im a mature student aged 35. I did a computer degree after school and currently work in an IT role but I went back to college to study engineering 5 years ago. I started off doing engineering maintenance, then mechanical engineering and finished with honours mechatronics. I would have stayed with mechanical but there were no part time courses.

I just graduated in November. I've got my cv done out well. I've been posting it to online agencies and ringing a few up and applying for jobs but to date I haven't got one interview. I guess when you have a job it's harder to look for a new one whereas if I was unemployed id be looking harder.

But engineering is where I want to work and I really believe I can excel in this area has this is where my interest and passion lies. The jobs at ASML really appeal to me because of the practical nature of them. Eventually I want to become a senior engineer. I achieved top class grades in every engineering course I did. I just need a break or someone to believe in me.

Any advice on some good recruitment agencies or companies to contact? I believe at the moment, networking is key. I've met some engineers through friends of mine which has given me some hope. That is how I heard of the jobs in ASML. If you have any good contacts I'd be very grateful to hear from you.

    Thanks again,

    R
