UPC media box - any channels on box after disconnection?

I moved into an new place a few weeks ago. There is a UPC media box here from the previous tenants (its about the size of a dvd player). Was just wondering if its possible to get channels from the box only without being connected to UPC? And if it is possible, would you know what cables I would need? Thanks for reading this, as you can probably tell, I don't know much about these things.

    No. Just...No

Thanks for the quick reply. Just thought I'd check it out with some people in the know before I relegated the UPC box to the top shelf of the wardrobe, never to be seen again until I move out.

It needs both a cabled connection to UPC and a smartcard enabled for an active account. Without both it's completely useless.

Don't the UPC boxes belong to UPC?

Yeah but they don't always ask for them back, especially the older boxes. I would never throw it out incase they come looking for it though.

Don't they still have the analogue channels though?

The cables in the house will still be active alright (eg. the old coaxial), but the digital box won't work, as far as I know.

Just be careful everyone, as we need to be on the ball regarding the charter. Yes, it is a bit OTT, but we have to.

You can't state that as fact, UPC might have disconnected them.

The digital box will not work without an active subscriber card, with or without a physical connection.

They generally do disconnect the cables at the tap, however locally it appears that it often gets missed in the digital capable areas.

Have a sneaking suspicion in the analogue only overhead areas you'd never get noticed for reattaching, but I wouldn't want to be the house owner who'd done that if they ever do come around for an upgrade...

Thanks for all the replies, I did consider contacting UPC to check if they wanted the box back, but since it was here when I got here, its not really my place to give it back. I've it put away now but its here if they come looking for it. Thanks again
