You could equally ask what is the best car for a one hour commute, and that would be similarly difficult to answer.

As for the theft issue, that rather depends on where you're going to leave it.

    Thanks Lumen!
I disagree with the where you leave it comment though. My current bike cost 40euros is 60 years old and can be left anywhere - nobody would want to steal it.cant say the same for my carbon road bike. Im looking for a happy medium. One that makes cycling pleasurable but is discreet/cheap enough not to lead to a breakdown if/when robbed.

A friend bought a very cheap second hand, for about 20 euro - it was absolute junk and overpriced at that, left it locked in the bike rack at Maynooth station, and it was still robbed.

In the last year I've commuted regularly on these four:

    On One Pompetamine Versa 11

    Canyon Ultimate AL

    Enigma Esprit

    Vitus Vee 26

Of these the one I most enjoy is the Enigma (on race tyres with rear mudguard) because it combines lightness, efficiency, reasonable ride quality and a dry arse.

After much experimentation I am decidedly not sold on the advantages of wider tyres or hub gears, but I did enjoy the disc brakes on the Pompetamine.

Neither am I particularly keen on using a rack and pannier, as what I gained from comfort I lost in agility.

If I was to make any improvements to the Enigma it would be the addition of a front mudguard (which would require a fork change) and maybe hydraulic disc brakes (to save me from ever having to clean the rims), although that would be very expensive and might kill the ride quality at the front end.

Anti-theft wise I use a front pitlock skewer, big lock and never leave it on street for more than an hour, and always in a very public place.
