    2.10 Ludlow

    Danandy 25/1

Although favourite Reginaldinho definitely sets the standard, I'm quite interested in Philip Hobbs chasing debutant Denandy who I think could run a very big race in what looks a pretty modest race. A Point To Point winner on his 4th time of asking, Danandy was picked up for £13,000 for current connections and he made a pretty good start when running out a decisive winner of a moderate bumper of 2m2f at Fontwell in January last year. He made his hurdling debut a month later at todays course over 3m where he certainly travelled like the best horse in the race but perhaps he got a bit lonely up the run in (he and the winner raced wide apart) as he went down by 1.75L with the front two 13L clear of the remainder. It was a very promising hurdling debut and he looked a horse with a considerable future. He had another start a couple of weeks later when sent of an 8/13 shot but he was reported "very ill" by Hobbs and you've clearly got to put a line through that effort. He made his seasonal debut on the back of an 8 month absence in a hot Novice Hurdle at Ascot in November and although beaten 102L he shaped quite a deal better than that. Sitting prominent throughout, Danandy was bang there after 3 out and Johnson looked to nudge him to the lead in the long run in before 2 out but he dropped out very quickly and was taken care of by Johnson. Although he faded at an alarming rate, he travelled well for a long way and I definitely think he is a horse that Hobbs is taking his time to get right given the illness he had earlier in 2012.

Danandy's final start came last month on his handicap hurdling debut over 2m4f and although he was pulled up he again shaped a lot better than that bare result. Held up just off the pace under Tom O'Brien, Danandy again travelled very well for most of the race and once handicap blot Gevrey Chambertain was sent clear Danandy was gingerly handled (doubt he would have placed either) but he certainly shaped as if he retained his ability. Although his very promising career took a big nose dive after coming home ill nearly a year ago, I'm hoping his two runs this season have been geared towards getting him right to go chasing which he begins today in what looks a very winnable race. He has first time blinkers which I hope is a sign that the handbrake will be let off and I also think its perhaps quite telling that he returns to Ludlow which is a course he clearly goes well at. A Point 2 Point winner, I am sure he was ultimately bought with the intention to go chasing and I expect him to be spot on for this. Richard Johnson takes the ride and Philip Hobbs has a really good record here with his chasers, and is 4-9 here in this sphere this season. Although the bang in form and progressive Reginaldinho deserves his place at the head of the market, he clearly isn't any world beater with his last (easy) win came off a mark of 109. Even if he has the potential to run to a level of 125, given that he has to concede the entire field 7lb it wouldn't take a world beater to finish ahead of him and I think Danandy has the scope to be at least that good. Given that Philip Hobbs said prior to the season starting that "I think this could be quite a nice horse", I'm willing to have a small bet on this chasing debutant and if taking to fences at the first time of asking I'm hopeful of a big run.

Ran well for an awful long way and I think one of two things happened. Either Richard Johnson is still very much taking care of the horse as he hasn't completely recovered from his illness or he still has a problem that the yard haven't got to the bottom of yet.

Anyone else think Richie McLernon was poor on the runner up. He made a mistake at the last but hung badly left with the jockey keeping his whip in his right hand before being done by a short head

Edit: Nevermind, watched it again he did use his left
