    Is that you minister?

But i'm sure that the concerned minister has a detailed list of all expences.....my reason for asking is that I ( in the emergency services) have only recently noticed that i am in 'harms way' almost daily
.....maybe its just because i am getting old? or realised how much my dependants rely/depend on me being there....& the fact that couldn't afford to be out sick or injured for any period of time....

You should look into one of the Income Protection Schemes available.

Do you get operational allowance? Marked on your payslip?

Re income protection, i'm insured up to my neck from car, house, health, prsi, life insurance & morgage protection ect ,ect. was really trying to avoid anymore but will have a look thanks.....

What i'm getting at is the potential loss of life , limb or finiancial ruin due to the everyday hazards that are faced in the job dealing with/for the public day to day wheather i'ts driving at 130kph, working on the side of a motorway, entering voilent situations or working/standing in the back of a moving vehicle.....ect

Of course there are those that will say that you should have known what you were getting into when joining up:rolleyes:....and to that i would say i have no regrets....... but should there be not finiancial recognition for having to work in increasingly uncontroled situations rather than the finiancial penalty of needing added insurance.......

Don't have the operational allowance on my payslip....
what is this defined as ?what is it for? who gets it and what is it worth? thanks....

Hi crack crack. Not too sure what exactly you do but as a prison officer i get operational allowance. I get paid every 2 weeks and it works out as €127.24 (thats 6 years service) extra per payslip. Now that goes up every year so it can rise to a decent amount. Now unfortunately we don't get to see much of that after USI, PRSI, pension contributions, health insurance etc but still its better than a kick in the teeth (which of course is literally a possibility).
What area of work are you in? If your personal safety is at risk and reading from your post it is you should contact your union (i know i know as much use as a chocolate teapot). At the very least i would try and get a few colleagues together and discuss it with a view of taking further action ie solictor route. Be educated - research everything and have an answer and be prepared for the nays of management.

Unfortunately as you are well aware workers personal safety seems to be at the bottom of the agenda these days which is a disgrace and money is been stripped left, right and centre. They are even discussing reducing the operational allowance ie danger money for soldiers in afghanistan!

How long are you in the job and what is it if you don't mind me asking? Obviously what you are employed at is important to see if you are entitled to it but it seems you feel under threat by what you are saying and thats not good enough.
The only advice I can give you is research all your rights and don't get caught out on a technicality.
    Best of luck.

I know the Gardai don't get danger pay, but maybe it's taken for granted that the work is dangerous and is built into the salary? I don't think it is, as there are some who are getting paid the same who work office duties.

Doesn't matter, people already think we're paid too much, even the suggestion of introducing danger pay would get a 99.95% negative reaction (the 0.05% being the people in the job).

Ok so i've had another good look. You are right. Its built into the salary in the guise of core pay. All the allowances you and i get are built into our core pay.
Ergo "danger money" is a very shady area disguised into several allowances.
However soldiers on active duty abroad do get danger money and its documented as such.

As for office staff getting theses allowances it won't be too long before a shake up hits them. It has already come in in some areas.
God i'm dreading next months budget - take take take.
And the silly idiotic people who public service bash when they hear about our allowances with no idea that it is PART of our core pay. And giving out about increments when we are only working up to what we should be on at the start. Ah if they keep it up i'm going on the dole!

You're not the only one, i think this budget will decide if i should cut my losses and quit, or stick it out with the hope that it might someday be reversed.

PS bashers will always bash the PS because, even when presented with facts which go against what they're saying, they will not back down. They have a bee in their bonnets and base the entire force on the actions of a few bad apples.

Re: the increments, who would join a 30 year job and not expect any increments?
