I've been looking at sony laptops but dont know whether I should get one in 15.5 inch or 17.3. I would like a bigger screen but on the other hand I would like the laptop to be more portable.

Can anyone tell me who has used both 15.5 and 17.3 inch laptops do you really notice much of a difference in screen size and is a 17.3 screen really necessary for a laptop ?

I have a 17" Acer Aspire 7730 here. It's really nice to use but is quite heavy and bulky so I actually also have a 13.3" laptop that I now use for carrying around. The Acer stays in the house.

My work laptop has a 15.6" screen while my personal laptop has a 17" screen.
When I bought the large one, I thought it would be better to have a larger screen, but now I realise that I should have gone for the smaller screen.
It's a lot heavier which makes watching movies in bed more difficult.
The larger screen uses more power so the battery needs to be recharged more often.
I go through airports quite often, and the additional weight and size makes it a hassle when going through security, where all laptops need to be removed for X-ray.
The larger size also means I can't use it either on a bus or airplane unless there's a free seat beside me.

If I could choose again, I would go for the smaller screen with a better quality screen.

And, the smaller one will be cheaper.

I don't have the best eyesight, so I find a 17.3 inch model very nice when I'm actually using it, and much prefer it to a 15.6, but you do notice it when you got to move it. It's by no means horrible or anything; you can still pick it up and throw it in a bag, it's just that little bit more heavy. Also, if you're careful picking one, battery life won't be an issue. My girlfriend's XPS 17 gets 7.5 hours when interneting, and the Samsung series 7 that I recently tried (NP700Z7C) got close to eight.
