    Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a wedding dress I love from preownedweddingdresses.com but I'm a bit worried if I'll be hit by customs?

I've found the dress I want on that site, 2nd hand but she's never worn it and the labels are still on. It's selling for half the price I'd pay here and it's €2500 new.

Has anyone any experience of this kind of thing? Is duty applicable to 2nd hand items?

    Thanks :)

As far as I know clothing from outside of the EU over the value of €150 is charged 17% customs, once you have that figure you calculate 23% VAT

I can't see how it being second hand would make any difference, particularly when there's tags on it. Customs can hold your package and invoice you the customs and VAT, you can be asked to prove how much it cost (although I think they only ask this for goods marked under €150 as they are exempt from customs but not VAT).

But some people get away without being charged anything. It depends on how many packages they're checking and the value marked on the package and who's delivering the package. I've always been charged though, tends to just cover VAT as nothing has cost over €150 for me.

Thanks I think I'll ring the American Embassy and check it out.

Contact the Revenue, I'd imagine they'd know more than the American Embassy as it's nothing to do with the American Embassy, it's Irish taxes and charges.

Sorry yea, I rang the Embassy and that's what they said. I'd actually need it delivered into the UK so I rang HMRC and they said basically add a third onto the value of the dress.

    :(

I am also hoping to order a dress from the USA and I was gonna ask the same question.

Is it true that you can escape customs if the package is marked as a gift?

You might get lucky but I would say no. I've had orders delivered to me marked as a gift but got charged customs.

No, even if a gift, if marked with a commercial value over €125 will incur customs.

It's not a third they charge you - it's nearly 43% now with the recent VAT increase - that is charged on the value of the goods plus what it cost to ship the item.

Buying mine off an individual so I have asked her to label the parcel at a lower value. I will be paying via two instalments (one small, one large). Means I will have proof of 'price' for customs.
Getting her to remove tags so item does not appear new....
    Am I missing anything?
