Rescue insurance for Tour du Mont Blanc?

    Hi all,

I'm probably going to do the TMB walking route this august.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tour_du_Mont_Blanc

I'm looking for information on rescue insurance.

I have VHI multitrip travel insurance, which takes care of medical bills.

But I understand mountain rescue is something you get charged for, and that helicopter rescue in particular is very expensive.

I contacted the VHI who told me they'd cover 200euro of the cost of getting to hospital after an incident... ...thats not going to pay for a lot of helicopter.

    Questions:
    1) Would people generally take out mountain rescue insurance, for just going on a walking route in the alps?
It doesn't seem like a dangerous walk, at all, or particularly remote; but I'm guessing its sensible to take out insurance if theres any chance of ending up needing mountain rescue in the alps? Opinions?

    2) Who would people recommend for insurance?
I know that the BMC do full travel insurance package, thats supposed to be pretty good. I'll get this if theres no better option, but its expensive, considering I already have health insurance. Is there any way of just buying rescue insurance?

I'd be grateful for any information on these topics!

I would recommend joining the UK branch of the Austrian Alpine Club, as well as insurance you get discounts in most alpine huts, and a nice newsletter a few times a year, and yes, i would take it out on walking holidays in the Alps.
A slip, is all it takes, could be a change of route, heavy snow can make a normally safe route tricky.

I'm pushing the Mountaineering Ireland agenda today, seems they're doing a great job.

They will provide you with trip insurance through the British Mountaineering Club without you having to join the BMC. http://www.mountaineering.ie/membersandservices/viewdetails.asp?ID=11

I joined the austrian alpine club in the end.
The Austrian Alpine Club membership is about the same price as MCI/MI.
However, the AAC membership includes rescue costs cover, which the MI insurance doesnt. You also get some hut rights, as an added bonus.

If you pay for MI membership, you also have to then pay extra for the BMC insurance, which is pretty expensive. It does seem to be a much more comprehensive offering than you get with the AAC - its a much wider type of cover - but as I already have VHI multitrip travel insurance, which seems to me to cover treks in the altitude range of the TMB, the AAC seemed to be the best option for me.
