Is this a great step towards the peace process? I think so?
Mr McGuinness, a former IRA commander, is planning to shake hands with the Queen during her two-day visit to Northern Ireland.
The sight of Mr McGuinness and the Queen shaking hands will be viewed as one of the landmark moments of the peace process.
It is unclear whether the handshake on Wednesday morning will be in private or in public. A decision about how the deeply symbolic meeting will be handled will be made on Monday.
The meeting will be poignant for the Queen and for the Duke of Edinburgh, since the Duke’s uncle Lord Mountbatten was assassinated by an IRA bomb planted on his yacht off the coast of County Sligo in 1979.
The Duke is expected to accompany the Queen to Northern Ireland next week, Buckingham Palace said.
