VAT registration

Bit wet behind the ears here so go easy! :)
I have a TR2/VAT registration application in with revenue at the moment.

My intended trading start date was 1st May and I started yesterday, I contacted revenue today as I hadn't heard anything back about a vat number etc. There's a three week backlog due to understaffing (can't be fun working there given the situation!). Naturally I was advised by a very understanding member of staff that I can't issue vat invoices until I get the no. (suggested it would be another three weeks or so).

I'm trying to get started via the welfare short-term enterprise allowance scheme, not exactly flush with cash at the moment and there are massive outflows as it's a startup.

My question: is there anything I can do to expedite matters? How do people invoice before they hit the obligatory-vat-registration threshold??

    All help or advice welcome!

They just give an invoice with no mention of VAT on it
