First half marathon

I would like to try a half marathon. At present I run (on a good week) 3 x 6 mile runs with one or two 3 mile runs. They are fairly hilly routes and I run at about 10 minutes a mile, occasionally a minute faster but not always. I have run 1 x 10k race (56 minutes!) but didn't really enjoy it as it seemed really grimly competitive but hopefully for a half M I'll be better prepared for a less than jolly atmosphere. All that aside do you think that with 4 - 6 weeks training I could be ready for a half marathon??? If so, in your experience what sort of distances do I need to be running in the run up to the race??? And for experienced marathon/half marathon runners what hints and tips did you find helped get you through those 13 miles???
