Jobs with travel allowance

A role I'm looking at currently advises that it pays a travel allowance.
I've never had a travel allowance paid in previous positions I've had.

Perhaps a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question but from experience how much would you expect this to be? I'm assuming it is taxed as regular income.
    Thanks

Normally they are in the region of about 55 cents per km id say. Id imagine you could submit those as expenses and you won't be taxed on them. I used to work for a UK company and we could submit expenses for food, petrol, diesel. When it came to payday all the expenses were added up and kept aside untill the normal tax was taken. Then they were added back in at the end to bump up my net pay.

Im sure it different here though as Ireland never does things as simple as the UK.

Expenses are not taxed in Ireland either.

thanks for replies, I'll consider it an added bonus if it is 50c/km and I do get the job!
But at 160km round trip each day to work I'd be surprised if they were to hand over 80 quid a day for travelling to/from work

A travel allowance would be for you driving somewhere for work related jobs. They dont pay for you to drive from home to the office, its usually paid from office location to job location .
