I know that this is nothing to compare to some of the problems in this forum but its really getting me down. Im a first year in dublin doing a science course that has pretty full on hours. I have 9 o clock starts every morning and Im finding it impossible to get up in the mornings for those lectures if I go out! To get in for 9 I have to get up at half 7 and Im just finding it impossible to do both. I dont want to be missing lectures because its hard to try to catch up but at the same time I feel like im missing out by not going out because all my class are bonding..except they still manage to make it in for 9!
I just never seem to hear the alarm and I sleep right through. Ive tried leaving the club at 2 and being in bed for half 2 but I just cant manage it. Any tips?

You probably just need to pace yourself!

How often are you going out during the week? I think going on a proper night out once a week should keep you feeling in the loop but not absolutely wrecked the rest of the week.

And a Thursday is probably the best night... it means you've just the Friday morning to get through instead of being wrecked for the whole week! (and then weekends judge for yourself)

Just make sure you're not falling too behind in your lectures/assignments etc. I did a full on science course too and had to spend most evenings working to keep on top of things :/

I dunno, I don't think I'd be able to work that late and then be up and perky for college the next day. I've studied science myself, and tbh, you'd want to get a wiggle on before you really do start falling behind. It's not a course you can do half arsed. You're burning the candle at both ends by the sound of it, and somethings going to give. If you otherwise like the course, I'd consider sacrificing the job in favour of something with more manageable hours.

Do you still live at home? is this possible?

Go to bed on time and get up on time. Oh, and learn how to spell!

Going to bed at 2am and expecting to be bright eyed the next morning is senseless. Can you not restrict it to one night per week?

Hey OP, sorry if this is goin to seem like bad advice but I say go out. I did a science course too and I missed plenty of lectures in first year. Not saying that thats necessarily a good thing but I think your first year is very important in making friends, getting settled etc. If you are in any way a decent crammer you can get by on your exams. If you're someone who needs to put in a lot of work to get average marks avoid this advice. Also if you have assignments coming up maybe avoid going out near them. I just think its important to be involved in the other side of college life, particularly at the start because TRUST ME you won't have as much time to in your 3rd and final year.

Alternatively to going out you could just join some societies that meet in the evening time if your main concern is making friends.

Whats the problem with leaving at 2? Also is there anyone you can ask to help get you up in the morning? Or buy a louder alarm? It shouldn't be that hard to get up...

I'm a mature student doing science as well and like you I haven't a hope in hell of getting up for 9am lectures if I go out with the class.. So for that reason I limit my nights out.

You should really limit yourself to one night out a week OP cos you will find yourself in 4th year like many of my classmates who are now under pressure to finish on 2.1's and even 2.2's cos of their dismal attendance and subsequent poor grades in 2nd and 3rd yr!!

I understand that is easy for me to say as I'm 37 and have had my fair share of parties when in my 20's......

Is there any chance u could kip in the house of one of your mates who does make it to lectures perhaps???

James W taking a break for failing to read the charter during their last vacation.

If anyone hasn't already done so, please take the time to read the forum rules in the charter.

Many thanks.

I think you need to selective about the nights you choose so rather than going out five nights a week and end up having to repeat a year and see all your mates progress on to 2nd year without you, choose two decent nights instead. Stick to minerals after midnight so you've a few booze free hours before getting up. And invest in a really loud alarm clock and keep it across from your bed so you physically have to get out of bed to turn it off.

Ickle Magoo you don't like James W do you? Bit harsh there imho!!

OP - just go out the once or twice a week - your course should come first - candle at both ends and all of that! If I went to bed at 2am I'd be knackered getting up at 7 - might manage it one night a week but that'd be it! Tough having lectures at 9am - just the way the cookie crumbles! :)

Do you go out everynight? Why don;t you cut back a bit, I bet there are others on your course that would rather a night in one of the nights, watching a dvd or something.

Otherwise, drink plenty of water before bed, take a Berrocca Boost in the morning and pace yourself.;)

Alright, either you still go out but go home early, get a better alarm and a bit of coffee, or just do what the others are doing, generally missing their first lecture but making it in for the rest of the day dying and doing their work on the weekend. I'm going to have to agree with another poster here, it really is good to make friends, they'll help you out so much later on in conferring in how to do assignments etc. Like you, if I'm drinking the night before I won't make it in, simple as. However I do think it is possible to go but stop drinking at say 11 so you can do both, I think that's what lots of people do, but they just don't admit to it. And it would seem that a lot of students aren't too bothered to go out on the weekend because weeknights are so much cheaper, so make the weekend your study time instead.

Yep go for the good old 'last bus home' excuse, except if you live in town well then maybe you can have the craic, few pints and slink off around midnight there is no reason you have to stay out until 2, I've found things get kind of boring and a bit messy after 12, no one should pressure you into staying out later than you want to.

I wouldn't worry about it focus on your studying, I even found going out on a thursday twice a month kept me in the loop, also going easy on the drink,a lot of pints of water and panadol with coffee in the morning helps.

You seem to be very anxious about this and my worry is why you're finding it so difficult to get up at 7 am after a good nights sleep, it personally takes me time to adjust im doing my thesis and the rest of my college work at the moment for final year and I'm doing 12 hour days with little sleep, I can't imagine the luxury of 6 hours sleep, I've had a few nights out and I've gotten by purely because my mind was in the right place, the I can do it mode, how cheesy is that right.

In the past when I've had trouble getting up its been when I'm worried about the day ahead, I've always been in a rush and it wears me down so now I aim to be in someone 30 minutes earlier so in reality I arrive there 15 mins earlier rather than running for buses, into class and being in a huff and not focused or relaxed, helps me a lot more that the extra half an hour of sleep on top of 7-8 hrs.

Seems to me that you know what you need to do, you just can't do it.

How often do you go out?

If you know for a fact that going out makes you miss the early lectures then try and box clever and don't miss the same lecture a couple of weeks in a row, keep up to date with lecture notes as well, nothing worse than having to scramble to get notes in the lead up to exams.

You're getting too little sleep, and alcohol is massively lowering the quality of what little sleep you do get.

If you're leaving it 'til half 2 to go home, know that even if you do make it to your morning lectures, they are useless to you. You can sit there half-comotose, scribbling notes and feeling good about making it in, but you're not learning much of anything. You'll still need to catch up later, because you'll need to process the material as though it was new.

My college days are over now, and I work in software development. If I did what you are doing, I would be utterly sh!t at my job. Like you, I'd wind up showing up late all the time - and once I was sitting at my desk, I wouldn't be much more than a warm body trying to look busy.

If you choose to skip the morning lectures by staying out too late and too often, at least make a conscious choice of it and accept the cost 100%, rather than believing you can do everything.

gaa131 taking a break for breaking our charter. As this is the second instance of this rule violation a holiday is warranted.

Paddy Bateman - if you have an issue with a response from any poster please use the report button. As you noted yourself back seat modding is frowned upon in this forum and breaches of our Charter do result in bans.

Thanks
