VRT on a classic - custom registration request for a specific number

Have searched but not found an answer to this...

Basically I've imported an old Fiat 500, and the thought occurred to me that it would be a laugh to get 77-D-500 as a plate, if available. Who knows - it could have been de-registered at some point. Having checked Cartell.ie and similar sites it seems there is no registration of this number.

I'd like to request it while going through the VRT process next week. Is this something they will do (via Rosslare or wherever) or is it asking a bit much? I would generally go for the ZV option, but this would be great if possible.

I know on new cars there is a nominal fee for requesting a specific registration number, but how does it work with imported classics?

    Cheers

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the Irish system doesn't allow you choose a number - even if it's an old one that's been 'decommissioned'.

If you opt for a ZV number now, you will get something like ZV 100XX . Worse still, if you opt for a 77 plate, you will get 77-D-120001 or something - as the system changed last month to introduce this ridiculous new number scheme.

See this thread here from about post 16 onward specifically.

If I'm wrong about the specifics the guys here will clear it up. :)

Lots of the lower numbers have been held back particularly the 100's.
If your willing to pay €1000 its worth asking, why else are they held back?

    BTW, I checked 77 d 911.....its on Syangyong Corvette.

If in Dublin you will get 77D12000X...
And any ZV you get will be a 5 digit issue over ZV10000...
The boat was missed by exactly a month.

End of Story sadly. The retards in Rosslare havent a clue.

I cant get anything on 77D up until 77D901. Strange that, as theres usually a few lower issues pre '93 there.
Anyone know of a 77D car with a registration lower than 77D901? There must be some!?

    77D34
    77D127

Both of these cars were reg'd before '93 and this was when reg numbers started at 1 when switch to the 87 D type format.
If you imported a car after the switch in '87 but before '93 it went 77D1 and so on.
I'm fairly certain '93 was when they started the import numbers at 20.
It was also when they stopped using old brown tax books and switched to the Certificate type.
    I could be wrong though.

Does the above make any sense??

Perfect sense Kevin, though only older ones started at #20 and newer issues, from the early 60s at #500. 77 seems to have jumped to #900 though oddly.

Id say you could justify a three line square plate that may look fairly military...

    76
    D120
    001

Only certain counties started at 500, eg 66LD500.

Dublin seems to start at 800 eg 64D821, but only for cars from '60 onwards?

Tallies with my notes. 1963 onwards 800+.

Although the new system applies across the board regardless of year.

Getting a low number now is only going to work if you have enough cash to massage the system.
