Taking a Gap Year then applying to UK

Ok so I'm in 6th year now and I've (finally) decided that I want to do Dietetics in university. I was undecided for months and months because I'm interested in so many different things like nutrition, history, languages and I couldn't chose.
My dad didn't quite convince me not to apply to the UK but after listening to him I got it into my head that I wouldn't apply and that I wouldn't do Dietetics. So I haven't applied to the UK.

Now my problem is that there is only one place in Ireland that does Dietetics and thats in Trinity/DIT, a joint course. The points are very high though, around 540 and although I could acheive that I would have to really push myself and I think I might fall short of it by perhaps 10 points or so.

My question is that if I don't get the required points for Dietetics in Dublin can I take a gap year and apply to the UK to Scotland to do Dietetics the next year in 2013? Would I be at a disadvantage? Can I do this and still apply after?

Also what could I do in a gap year?

Help and advice would be hugely appreciated! Thanks!

Moved to NI & GB Colleges

You can apply after taking a gap year as you would if you were applying straight after your LC. You won't be at a disadvantage. As to what to do with your gap year, most people in the UK work or volunteer (with the luckier ones being able to afford to go traveling) and if you could get some experience in the field you're interested in that would certainly help your application when the time comes around. It's not a requirement though.

The UCAS deadline is Jan 15th so you can still apply now for entry this September if you really aren't sold on doing the gap year.

    Thanks :)

Problem is that I'd have about a week to write my personal statement, look at colleges, etc. whereas people have been doing it for months and I don't really want to rush such a massive decision.

I've always wanted to volunteer, perhaps somewhere in Africa for a few months/ a year. Are there any good organisations that I could look up?

    Thanks
