Damaged AC Port

Firstly, I don't know much about computers so I ask that you pardon my technological ignorance. A while ago I damaged the AC port of my Dell Inspiron 1545 which resulted in the small cylindrical thing that the charger goes onto falling off. I still have the piece and managed to temporarily put it back together which enabled charging. However, now I can't get it to charge despite numerous attempts. Keeping the charger in maintains the charge and says "plugged in, not charging". Any slight movement results in a "not charging" notice. Obviously the best course of action is to bring it to a repair person but I'd like to understand the problem better to reduce the chances of getting fleeced. What should I ask for and what sort of prices should I be looking at?
