The girlfriend has the above laptop, when its turned on everything seems as it should but then the screen just goes dark, it seems to me like a backlight problem but I noticed when I took the battery out that the were signs of spillage on it, she of course denies that something spilled on it, where do I go from here ? Is it worth buying the back light for it or would the spillage have caused this problem? Any help appreciated

Replacing a backlight, at least in the USA, is less commonly done than replacing an entire LCD. Its extremely difficult and you'll end up with a crappy LCD unless you're in a dust free environment.

I'm guessing the motherboard is dead. However, what you should do first is find a desktop PC monitor with VGA connection and start the laptop connected to it. Maybe it will work, if it does then next you'd try replacing the backlight inverter which is a lot easier and cheaper.

Sorry I meant back light inverter, I've already tried connecting it to an external monitor and it works fine. Would this mean its nothing too serious wrong with it?

Yes, thats good news! A lot of these have had motherboard failure. Try getting a new inverter, definitely.

Also if you have another notebook, you could maybe test the backlight of the LCD on the other inverter, assuming its the same 15.4" type. You'd have to get the notebooks really close together or take out the LCD, haha.
