Unpaid engineering/CAD technician roles - madness

I have trawled across hundreds of different entry-level job specifications in the mechanical engineering and design sector. Some of them were unpaid placements, some of which involved 40 hour weeks. I found a lot of these on FAS. Is this the norm, or is the economy performing so poorly that companies can't afford to give decent renumeration for their workers? It's granted that the jobs in question are for new graduates. However, those graduates have gone through 4 year college degree, and some are more than adequately trained for these positions.

The greatest irony is, that those who were responsible for the downturn (i.e bankers) are actully advertising fully-paid entry-level graduate positions in the financial sector. Some placements offer such a great salary that they don't disclose it.

So in conclusion, I have to work for free to help someone design renewable energy electricity generators, but I'm going to be absolutely minted for working on some bullsh*t financial algorithm that's probably going to ruin the world. I just don't get it.

I'm in the position of applying for engineering jobs right now. I don't see how I would be able to support myself by working full time for free. I've been told by Social Welfare office that I can get on FAS work placement scheme, but I can't claim the dole because I wasn't claiming it in the last 3 months. I was actually told that in my case, I will have to work 9 months for no pay on a Work Placement Scheme.

So if I do a master's degree in design engineering instead, while being supported by a grant, will I be able to apply for more demanding positions that actually offer a salary?

Sorry for the long post, but I need to get some things sorted out and all my doubts resolved.

    What's your working engineering experience?

Also nothing stops you looking for work while you're on an internship or WPP.

What grant are you talking about?

Almost no ' real ' jobs on FAS site nowadays - all Internships / Work Experience ( unpaid positions ).
