I am a mature student. I applied and got this course last year but had to deffer as i did not qualify for the Back to education allowance.
Hoping to do it this year.
    How difficult is it?
how many hours a week in college?
What is the work load like?

    Hi there,

I am in IT Sligo doing applied social studies. I am going into third year.

In Social studies you do modules like psychology, Law, Communications, computers, sociology, drama/art, professional studies, politices, policies etc. In some colleges the modules differ slightly.

It is about 19 hours a week in lectureres. However they can be spread throughout the day from 9am to 6pm monday to thursday. and till 12am on friday. However I was never in till 6 pm, usually finished around 3 each day and off on fridays.

In social studies in sligo and most other colleges. Work placement is for half the year in second and third year. lecturers are from september to december and exams in january. and then on work placement from end of january to may. In first year the full year is in college.

Brillant course, so many areas can work in when qualified. Homeless, disability, elderly, youth, children, travellers etc.

    hope that helps,

    which path

Also completed this course and graduated in 2007, i really enjoyed although there is alot of work involved.
However its very practical and at the moment its the main area that appears to be still hiring. I got full time work two months after graduating started doing relief work straight away. The placements give you the best experience and my advice would be try get placement in a service that is quite challenging because you will learn so much and gain experience.
Also the subject covered are all mainly quite interesting.
    Best of luck! :D

I know lots of people that did first year last year, and they didn't really need a laptop. A4 pads etc were good enough for them.

Second year they have work placement until Christmas, but one or 2 of them said they might get a Netbook instead of paying a few extra hundred €€€ for a laptop which isn't really needed.

Netbooks are perfect for taking notes anyway and some are pretty slick machines.
