Hey guys, I'm editing .vobs from a DVD but my computer isn't that fast, it handles video (.avi, mp4 etc) just fine but not these GB files. I have a few questions :

    1) What would be the best format to convert them to so they're more manageable? HQ mp4s? wmvs?

    2) The end product will be a 640x480 mp4 file. Would a different format be better (eg encoding it as an avi or mpeg) as a source file?

    3) Also, I notice that there's a difference between FPS in PAL and NTSC. I'll be posting the videos on the net (hopefully when i'm done), which would look better? (i'm worried about screen tearing/playback issues etc) The DVDs are PAL, should I be working in PAL or converting to NTSC. I intend to upload them to youtube/blip etc.....

    Thanks for your help!

the extension or container of the video file (.mp4 .mov etc) is not as important as the codec used. What you need to find is an 'intermediate codec' that will work best with your editing software... try googling 'intermediate codec' maybe try using mpeg streamclip and or cineform

    2) The end product will be a 640x480 mp4 file. Would a different format be better (eg encoding it as an avi or mpeg) as a source file?

this is really the same as the answer above. Sort your intermediate codec and you should be on your way

If you are just uploading to the internet you dont need to worry about the PAL/NTSC differences. PAL footage wil be 25fps edit as such. Edit PAL it wont look any better or worse than NTSC. If you are worried about 'tearing' make sure to export from your editor with interlacing as 'progressive'
