Going by the description and the appearance, it 'looks' like the same HDMI available at €2 a pop in most 'Euro 2' stores (and a variety of other €2 shops).

(Looking at one here in front of me, the description gives: high speed - 10.2Gps, Version 1.3, 1080P Compliant, 24K Gold Plated Connector, 95% Shielding and is labelled as "xtreme audio")

Are these HDMI cables still going?

Need one for my Xbox, going into city centre on Monday so have choices from those Euro saver stores, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl.

I remember buying one Peats Electronics for €20 but I'm hearing that these days the HDMI cables are all the same and there is no difference in quality.

Are these still rocking away on sale?

Aldi and Lidl may still have them, depends on the store. Tesco have them but the cheapest one I seen having a general browse was €30. Rip off.

Dunnes Stores have them for under €10. Or just get the one in the €2 euro shop. It'll either work or it won't.

Just too let all of you know if your using 1200p these are really good and work perfect where as the cheap ones from eurosaver places cause issues and cause a flickering line from about where the 1080th line would be on the screen. If your just using 1080p I would just go with whichever is cheapest.

    *sigh*

1200p is a misnomer. The max resolution is 1080. A HD cable either works or it doesn't work. There is absolutely nothing that a €100 cable will do that a €2 one won't - this is like paying more money for a more expensive USB cable for a printer to get a better quality print.

There's a good half dozen or so pound shops in town but not all of them have the cables. I think I got one in Moore St. If you're near Tallaght the one in the Square in Tallaght on Level 1definitely has them.

:) Seeing as you're attacking the him for writing 1200p I may as well point out that you're only half-right yourself. There may be no such thing as "1200p" but there is such a thing as 1920x1200, however it is not used by the TV/video industry but rather by PCs and other equipment (it's 16:10 rather than 16:9). This resolution IS supported by HDMI, as are much higher ones for that matter.

With the expensive vs cheap cables, if the cable works for what you want then it works (or will have very obvious defects) and 90% of people should just buy cheap cables. i.e. there's no difference in the output from a €2 cable successfully carrying 1080p and a €100 cable successfully carrying 1080p.

However, just because a cable carries 1080p correctly doesn't mean it will carry 1920x1200 or higher and carrying 720p doesn't mean it will carry 1080p. A more expensive cable is more likely to carry these higher bit-rate signals, although trying cheaper cables first, particularly if you're only talking about a few meters, is clearly the way to go. Ignoring the newer ethernet capable cables, HDMI cables are all wired in the same way so the difference is just down to the different bit-rates each cable can carry, which will depend on the quality of cable used and the length. €100 is obviously way too much money unless you're trying a much longer connection, in which case you may have to consider non-HDMI options anyway. HDMI cables are supposed to be marked by category (related to the speed they've been tested at) but in practice I've had plenty of cheaper cables fail at 1080p even though they've claimed to be "hi speed". You can pretty much ignore expensive HDMI cables unless you're looking for an unusually long cable.

Indeed, I know all of this but didn't bother typing it out for those who want a cable to do that they will be aware this. It is quite clear we're talking using a HD cable for TV since two of the comments mention games consoles.

There's enough snake oil salesmen in the shops selling "premium" cables that do the exact same job as a cheap €2 cable. No need to muddy the issue here on a forum where users may just dip in and out.

Indeed, I know all of this

Oh, well in that case you did your best to hide it. Deceit's post was more helpful and had less misinformation than your reply.
