Anbody know the real mpg for the super 1.6 diesel superb. They quote around 50mpg but I thought it would be more because its the same engine as the Passat which they quote up around 60mpg

You won't do any better than what they claim anyway so if 50 is claimed you won't be seeing 60mpg ;)

    56.54254145879 mpg.

p.s. Fuel consumption depends on quite a few variables.

Whatever figures are claimed are achieved in a lab on a stationary test bench with a computer operating the throttle.
So whatever the manufacturer claims, you can knock 10 mpg off.
My Focus supposedly does 60 mpg on the motorway, but that would only be downhill, wind in the back, 80 km/h max and following a truck very closely indeed.
I have achieved 55 on some short motorway runs, but I mostly average 50 mpg, give or take a smidgen.

I would expect mpg to be on the poor side. A 1.6 105bhp diesel engine in a car the weight and size of a Superb surely will struggle?

    What's 'super' about a 105bhp 1.6 in a car that size?

Is the fact that it is only 105bhp a real problem? I drove it and though it wouldn't leave a ball of type smoke behind the car it seems quick enough to me.
Could I get it remapped or would the engine blow up?

Nothing personal. I just don't see the point in having 30 grand tied up in what could be a great car (space, comfort, gizmos) and essentially ruining it by ordering it with an engine that wouldn't pull the skin off a sausage. I know we have traffic and speed cameras (and potholes) but a engine that puny in a car that big just seems wrong.

God no, why would you re-map and potentially invalidate the warranty when there are a number of 2.0 engines available?

Economy-wise, in real-world driving a 2.0d will be less stressed and barely less economical I'd wager. Tax-wise...what are you gonna save - €150 a year, if that - on a 30 grand purchase?

The 2.0L does not qualify for scrappage because the tax is 302/yr whereas the 1.6 is 104. That's the only reason why I wouldn't buy the bigger engine.

I was just looking at the technical spec of new passat estate. It has the same engine 1.6L engine as the superb.

    Unladen weight
    Passat 1543kg Superb 1518kg
    Laden weight
    Passat 2120kg Superb 2063kg

Anybody think the passat is under powered?

Up to a couple of years ago Passats were being shipped with a choice of 90 or 110bhp. We've just seen that the current Passat has the same engine in a heavier body. It'll probably be no ball of fire but not everyone wants to drive a ball of fire.

I would say with a engine like that you would be lucky to see the manufacturers figures. You will really have to stir the gears to make progress and at motorway speeds the revs will be high. These economy tests are not representative of real driving.

The mothers Megane has 106 and it's about ok for the car. The superb is nearly 150kg heavier so nearly like having 2 adult passengers all the time. If you regularly have a few passengers or carry anything heavy it will probably noticably make the car feel a good bit more sluggish.

    EDIT

going by yours stats it's a full 200kg heavier.

    Superb 1518kg

..because if it's the same 2.0Tdi as in the Passat, it's rubbish. You'll be lucky to see 5 years out of it, never mind 10.......
Your Megane's engine is better, actually......and if it's the 1.4 16v you have, it's 95bhp. Considering the 1.6 you're looking at is 10 years younger, and only 10bhp more.........makes you wonder........

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
