What repercussions could they face should it be proved that they were in fact injected with these amphetamines? Could they strip the nation of a competition they won 56 years ago?

Nothing. Firstly there is a statute of limitations with regards these things. Usually 7 years. Secondly I dont think there was any laws against doping in the 50's (probably because most people were naieve to it). I think the IOC only made it illegal in the 60's and drug tests only started in the late 60's.

What it does prove though is that football has a drug problem. Unfortunately the authorities turn a blind eye to it all, hence the appalling drug testing (getting better now, but still way off what an athlete or swimmer for example would have to go through). I remember reading about a premier league footballer (cant remember the name) who got drug tested once in his entire career! I've also heard (not sure how true but wouldnt be surprised) that many top players dont want to play in the Olympics because they would have to be subjected to 6 months of intense drug testing before the Games, like any other Olympian.
Some shocking stories about the Milan 69 European Cup winning team where one of the team members came out last year and admitted that the team doped. There was also huge systematic doping going on in Marseille and Juventus in 1993 and 1996. It amazes me that some people think football doesnt have a drug problem and like to slate sports like swimming and athletics. If this story is true it shows that it has been going on in football as long as it has been going on in other sports.

Is their not drug testing done? I would like to think that a sport as big as football is drug monitered pretty well.

There is but it is very lax. Out of competition testing up to very recently didnt even exist. I think the general drug testing is 3 players out of every 22 (plus subs) each game.

Just because a sport is big doesnt mean drug testing is top notch. Its not just football. Rugby has poor testing. NFL, NBA etc over in the USA didnt even have drug testing until the last decade if I'm not mistaken and the bans are very leniant. The problem is the very big sports face a conflict of interest. They dont want their big names involved in any big scandels as it will impact on the $$$$$ earned and its reputation. This is something that US Track and Field did back in the 80's, faced a clonflict of interest and covered up numerous failed drugs test, most notbaly Carl Lewis. Thankfully today Athletics has cleaned up its act and has (after Cycling) the most stringent drug testing in the world. Its a shame other sports dont do the same. Stories like this West German allegation impact on the history and reputation of this great sport.

If the drugs were not illegal if/when they took them, they did nothing wrong so who cares.

As usual in football, these things get swept under the carpet, but this article from 2007 gives a damning report on doping in football:
