UCD have become very slow at sending out invitations, etc. to graduations. You probably won't receive anything in the post until mid to late November.

There's no graduation fee like there is in Trinity, but you will have to pay for robe hire. You should find a link to Phelans (the company who supply the robes) on the conferring unit website.

You usually only get the pack 2 weeks before conferring date.

Thanks for the replies folks. I'm just a bit nervous about UCD's admin etc.
Yeah I heard some colleges have a fee of about €200 for graduating ceremonies.I seem to recall some kind of protest about it last year in Galway or somewhere.I could do without a fee right now tbh.
    Thanks again.

The only things you will pay for is the rent for the robes and any pictures you decide to get.

Trinity charge €114. Along with this, you have to higher the gowns, tux and pay for the photographs as well. It's a rip off for one day.

Hopefully you'll have Diarmaid Ferriter giving a speech to ye (the man's a legend, he gave a great speech last year) and not the stupid malignant cunt from the school of english some of us got who shited on about James Joyce (who gives a fuck about some alco, schizo novelist).

A gown will cost about €45 to hire. Other than that there's no cost.

Lads and ladies, I'm looking for the date when those getting their History MA get conferred. I had a look at the dates here:

    http://www.ucd.ie/confer/schedule.htm

Am I right in thinking it's Monday, 13th December 2010, as it says that's the date for 'Higher Degrees in the Colleges of Arts and Celtic Studies'?

Haven't had any info from the college on this either.

I dont know, other courses seem to specify that its a masters graduation so it might not be on the 13th. I hope not anway, I have an exam on the 14th!

I got my conferring pack from UCD yesterday. So happy days. €45 to rent the gown etc.If I could avoid paying that I would but it's not as bad as I first feared. Thanks for all the replies.

:)Yeah I could do something like that I suppose but don't you have to wear certain colours or something? It's not a big deal really I suppose.

Yeah, you have to wear a gown that adheres to the specifications. I borrowed a gown from a friend for my graduation and it had to be checked to ensure that it was ok to use it. I still had to rent the hood, though.

Am I right in thinking that if you receive your degree in absentia (i.e. don't attend the ceremony) then you don't have to pay any costs at all?

Nope, there's no costs involved if you graduate in absentia as you don't have to hire your gown.

Hey I am not able to attend (read: cannot be arsed going to) the conferring ceremony. I'm filling in the In Absentia form, but it says 'Degree to be conferred'. What exactly do I put in here? I did Arts Omnibus Joint Major, do I put in that or what is on the list giving details they posted out? As in, BE Degree (Hons) (Joint Major) (Surname N-Z)?

I'm due to be conferred in UCD shortly as well - assuming that the weather is ok. I have ordered the robe, but just want to clarify what is expected as regards other aspects of the dress.

We don't have to wear a tux, do we? I assumed that black trousers plus a black or white shirt would suffice. Do we need a jacket as well?

No. Normal business suit will do the job. At the end of the day, how many times will you ever graduate? Might as well look the part for the few hours that are in it.

I don't disagree with you. At the same, however, money is a little bit scarce for some people in the present climate.

So, if noone minds, I just to want to seek clarification on a few things:
    • Does the shirt have to be white? Or can it be black?
    • Do we have to wear a jacket? (Will the robe cover that anyway?)

These things aren't clearly laid out on the UCD website, as far as I can tell; so I'm guessing we have a degree of leeway. Then again, maybe they just assumed that people would be familiar with the protocol (which I amn't).

You can wear whatever you want. I have seen guys in combats, guys in white shoes etc at graduation. Would not be very fair on guys to give them a dress code when girls can wear whatever they want.

You can wear whatever you like, UCD aren't fussy and they wont not let you graduate. I know a chap that wore a pair of runner, jeans and a t-shirt when he graduated and nothing was said to him.

Do you have to reserve the gown in advance or can you just stroll into the Astra Hall and pick one up? Due to be conferred tomorrow.

In Trinity you have to wear black and white. I wore a purple dress to my grad last year, I like being all colordy!

Does anyone know what the gown is like for an MA conferring? I'm graduating Wednesday week?

Longer sleeves and a bigger hood than what you would have had for your BA graduation.

He should have got an information pack a few weeks ago. There is a link on the UCD site (google UCD conferring) with some basic info.Depending on surname the conferring ceremonies are at different times. You can pick up gown from Astra Hall from 9am. I would ring the student desk and see what the story is and why he didn't get the pack.
Your brother must be fairly laid back if he wasn't bothered about looking this up:) I know it's not a big deal for some I suppose, but I'm delighted with myself.:)
    Either way,good luck.

The problem could be that the address they have for him is his student address and not his home address. Other things like a change in phone number can make people difficult to contact. Surprised he did not ever think of looking it up, he must be ultra laid back about it all! The dates have been up since the summer and the packs normally arrive a few weeks before the date.

Hope it all worked out anyway!

UCD are an absolute disgrace for not informing people of their conferrings (or anything for that matter). My mother (who is hell bent on going) rang them three months ago to confirm the date....gave them my name, student number etc. I still hadn't received any info regarding it last week and I rang them. They claimed that my name hadn't been forwarded yet. What a load of tosh.

How come a university like UCC can manage it and they can't? I swear I never want to set foot in that place after tomorrow.

The dates for graduations are made available about 9-12 months prior to your graduation on this site. I would have thought that was fairly common knowledge

I received my graduation pack yesterday for my grad next monday. It was posted about 7 days before that but it was delayed due to weather. They generally give 2 weeks notice.

If you have holds on your account you wont be issued with any information, do you owe them some fees?

I was at the UCD conferring yesterday Monday Dec 6th, in the snow. I thought the whole day was lovely and the organisation superb

Despite no gowns being available on Friday because UCD was closed by snow, it was quick and easy to pick the gown up on Mon morning. We got pics taken before the ceremony, nobody there, no queues. The 45 euro for gowns is the only expense, unlike the rip-off in some other colleges.

Ground stiff did a great job clearing all the paths. Lots of people taking pics in the snow. The girls' high heels were crazy, but looked great.

The ceremony itself had a great atmosphere, not at all impersonal. Maybe lots of people "in abstentia" because of the snow? It was so well done, you could hear each name being called, very clearly, great silence in the hall.. The procession of students and academics with classical music was impressive and each name and number was correct, like clockwork. A History guy , James, gave the speech, very interesting, and short, thank God. Afterwards we had canapes and stuff in the restaurant.

You could have checked on the UCD website--they tell you which alphabetical group is getting conferred at what time on what day. So really people had to be aware of it.
Look, it is a special day and a rite of passage. I really enjoyed it.

Loved my grad last year, and I can't wait for my one which is this coming Monday. (I hope Declan Kiberd gives a speech at mine :) ) It's my boyfriends graduation today. I'm very proud!!

The ceremony runs very smoothly and is over fairly quickly. Tea and food in the restaurant after. :)

Had my conferring on Monday. Really well organised and enjoyed the day. The snow made for interesting photos. Big queue for professional photographers afterwards in the Astra Hall so didn't bother. The reception in restaurant wasn't untill 5:15 and we finished around 3 so we didn't hang round in the cold for that. Went for a meal with family later on.Picked my robe up on the morning,no hassle. Congrats to everyone else.:)

I graduated later than everyone else in my class. I knew the date of the graduation last June. I rang up in October to confirm the date (just in case) and they said they would send out the graduation pack. I still hadn't received it a week ago and I rang them up and basically your one on the phone lied through her teeth saying I had only just been added to the list of graduands....even though I was mysteriously on this list in October. It just seemed like a half-arsed effort on their part...... I just don't think the administration is up to scratch in the college. Had mine today and it was grand. ....we were warned at the end of the ceremony about not walking on the lake:D

What department did you ring up? And what did you ask in October? If you rang the student desk, you will have had the date confirmed (i.e. they looked at the dates online just like everybody else can). That hardly means you were on a list.

I rang the conferring crowd in the admin building. It definatly wasn't the student desk because i actually spoke to some lady whos responsible for organising the conferrings.Ah well its all over now.
