Shared disk over AirPort Extreme

Looking for some help here folks please. I have an Airport Extreme with 2 x 500GB disks shared (via a USB hub) using Airport Extreme Password. One disk is used for my TimeMachine backups of two MacOS machines, and the other disk is used to share my media to my two macs and to my wi-fi media player.

All works fine, but from time to time, when I try to browse to the media disk in MacOS (Snow Leopard BTW), while I can see the Base Station, and the disk attached to it, it won't connect to it. Only thing that will resolve the situation is to restart the AirPort. (Physically disconnecting the disk will also work, but that would mean going all the way downstairs. Feck that!!)

The TimeMachine disk will never fail to mount for backups, it's just this bloody disk that disconnects and fails to mount from time to time.

Anyone out there ever have similar issues with HDD's shared in this manner?

Any help would be muchly appreciated.

    STW.

Not sure, but are the two different types of external disks? Some of them have power saving modes where they spin down when not being used for a time, and perhaps it's wakeup mode is a bit iffy?

Regarding Time Machine over Airport Extreme/AirDisk - do note that it's not supported by Apple and that many people have had difficulties with it - for some it doesn't seem to work full stop - for others it appears to work, but when it comes to restore, they have problems. I gave up trying to make mine work and use an external drive on each machine, until I get around to setting up one machine as an AFP server, which is supported.

After much investigation, it would appear that this is being caused by either the HDD's wake being iffy (as described above) or the Airport being unable to physically wake the disk.

The HDD with the problem is powered via USB, and the other disk has it's own power supply. However, I am using a powered hub to connect both of them, so I don't think that is the problem.

If I connect the HDD to my Mac directly and let it sleep, it wakes up straight away when point Finder at it.

The Airport will wake the powered disk straight away. I use that for Time Machine backups, so when they run, there is no issues. I can see TM kicking off on my machine, and at the same time, I hear the disk come to life.

Any ideas how I can force the other disk to wake through the Airport?
