What's up with the iPod Classic?

Don't usually browse this forum, so apologies if this has been discussed before. :o

But what is this talk about Apple phasing out the iPod Classic? I know they didn't announce a new model this year, but loads of news articles I read on the subject stated that the Classic will eventually be axed completely. :( I would have thought that there would still be a significant sub-section of people out there who prefer these to the other iPods.

I'm not ready to give up my iPod Classic 6G just yet, so I'm not specifically looking for Apple to release a newer model. I just think it would be a shame not to see an updated iPod Classic sometime in the future. And I can't see touch interfaces being as intuitive as the click wheel when browsing a massive library of songs.

I think the one they have out now will do fine, I mean what more could they add, Pretty much more space which is not needed.

I could have imagined them releasing another version but since they didn't i really agree that a newer version isn't needed.

Ask yourself what features could they have added, That would make you forget your 6th gen.

I agree, I can't think of anything significant they could add. But I'm sure they could add new features and improve on some things later down the road, rather than phase out the device completely.

The one thing I definitely would like with my iPod Classic now is more space. Unfortunately I bought mine at the time when only the 120GB was available, and now 160GB is the standard version.

I suppose with that much space you'd never delete, just keep adding?

They still have the classic listed, for now, but it's exactly the same as last year's model.

I have an iPhone and I still listen to music only on my iPod classic and it's not just the capacity, it's the scroll wheel. IMO, the iPhone / iPod touch suck as a music player. If I want to stop my iPod or skip a track, I just press the scroll wheel through my jeans, I don't have to pull it out of my pocket, press the home button and unlock it first. Hell the capacitive sensor is good enough that I can adjust the volume through my trouser fabric.

The new whizzy UIs just don't allow that.

I miss the days when apple gave a damn about simple UI design.

Yeah, that's a good point. With the click wheel you know exactly where the buttons are whereas with a touch screen, you'd have to look at the screen to see which area to press every time.

I know the scroll wheel isn't ideal for most apps, internet browsing, games, etc. but for browsing and playing music, it's perfect. I wouldn't snub it as a video player either if you don't mind the small size.

I know they're not great quality, but the Apple headphones support volume changes and skipping tracks by double clicking the mic.

You don't have to unlock the iPhone to use the music either. Double pressing the home key when music is playing brings up the iPod controls for Play/Pause, Skip and Volume.
