Share internet using MacBook running 10.5.8 & Huaweii E122 modem on 3 network

I have a MacBook on which I'm running 10.5.8 which I use a Huaweii E122 dongle to browse the net with 3.

I recently bought the new iPhone but live in a non 3G area so can't use the web functionality of the phone at home. I've heard of people sharing Internet by going into System Preferences > Internet & Network > Sharing & using the built-in Airport to use their Macs as a "router".

I've found numerous tutorials which tell me how to do this if I had standard cable internet. When I try to do it using my 3 mobile broadband the Share Internet option under Sharing is greyed out. I take it that the installation of the driver for the dongle closes some ports or something along those lines which doesn't allow me to share. Does anyone know of a workaround or is anyone doing this successfully on another provider.

This what I can see if I set it to share my iPhone's connection via wifi. Do you get anything like it?
I presume yours would say 'Huaweii E122 dongle' or something where mine says 'iPhone USB'.

    IntSharing.tiff

I didn't actually try it but I presume if I was to check the 'Internet Sharing' box it would work.

In theory, that should work but when the dongle is plugged in the only option in the dropdown is the dongle. I'm confused by the whole thing really.

I have figured out that when the dongle is plugged in, the Network location (found under the Network tab in Sys Pref) changes from Automatic; where all options in dropdown are active to 3connect where thats the only option in the dropdown.

Its obviously something to do with the drivers & the way the software is set up to run the dongle but it doesn't help me out at all.

I was able to share a similar Huawei dongle in the manner described. I didn't use any drivers or software, and the Mac just recognised it as a USB dial-up modem, essentially. Try uninstalling whatever software came with the stick.

I'm sharing my 3G connection over wi-fi on Snow Leopard.

Make sure you click that padlock in the bottom left (obvious, I know).

Then, choose to share HUAWEI-MODEM (definitely the one that has the WAN IP - can check under Network Utility by flicking through your machine's interfaces).

Then choose to share it using Airport. Ensure you put a password on it. I had issues until I chose a 5-character password, as recommended for compatibility in the dialogue box. Pity it's WEP but still better than no encryption at all.

You then need to tick the Internet Sharing box and it'll turn on wi-fi and prompt you to start sharing your connection before it'll work.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try later. Can you do a couple of screen grabs of the screens you see. I'm running the version before Snow Leopard so I just want to compare the two.

    Oh my god! Genuis.

I got this working on 10.6, working flawlessly!

I now I can do Facetime!!

    For 10.6

Turn on Airport. Setup a Computer to Computer Network. Give it a password.

Go to Systems and Preferences > Sharing > Select Huawei from the drop down and tick Internet Sharing.

It was that easy for me

What network are you using? Is it 3?

Cool. Looks like I'll just have to bite the bullet & upgrade to snow leopard to get it working. I don't get those options when I go to sharing.

    Cheers man

It should still work under Leopard. The layout is more or less the same.

Where are you having a problem? Is Internet Sharing still greyed out? You need to untick Internet Sharing in the sidebar before you can change the settings.

Here are the screens I see & can't get sharing to work.
In the pic below I don't have the option to share the connection with anything. You can see the list below the dropdown is empty.

In the pic below you can see that all the rest of the options down the left are greyed out & inactive. The Location dropdown on the right is now at 3connect.
    Picture2.png

I tried changing the Location back to Automatic & the connection drops & cuts off.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

I see. The Huawei interface is all by itself under the 3Connect location so you haven't a chance of sharing through Airport when it's not available there.

Maybe switch back to Automatic and click the + to add the HUAWEIMobile-Modem network interface. Copy the settings from 3Connect. Then sharing should be an option.

Thanks for that Ethernet. I'll try tonight & post results.

Got it sorted. Copied the settings & couldn't get it working but found a printout of the PDF manual for installing the first generation Huaweii modem onto a Mac and used the advanced settings there that I wouldn't have had a hope of setting manually. When did I get this sorted? After coming in from the pub with nine pints in me. Should have went at it pissed earlier. Cheers for the advice on copying settings.
