I'd start by deciding on the budget and making a list of things you are interested in:

    sports
    shopping
    niagra falls
    skiiing
    etc

I would then buy a guide book and see where I could do all those things. Google is also your friend...as are other travel forums. I sometimes use the thorn tree forum.

Then simply work out a logical path that approximately covers what you want to do/see. You may decide to fly into one airport and out of another. Always leave a few days free to accomodate extras.

Whether to use a travel agent or not depends on the person. I book all my own stuff over the internet, but some prefer the safety of the travel agent. I also only ever book my flights and the first couple of nights accommodation. Then I see what I feel like doing or what local people recommend (usually better then a guide book) and going from there.

    Enjoy.
